Fairfield Stags Dominate Iona Gaels in Metro Atlantic Conference Matchup

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Interstat) — The Fairfield Stags, one of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference’s dominant forces this season, delivered a commanding performance Saturday afternoon, overwhelming the Iona Gaels 82-46 in a women’s basketball game at Webster Bank Arena.

From the opening tip, the Stags imposed their will, particularly on the defensive end, to set the tone for a lopsided affair. Fairfield, now 20-4 overall, used a stifling defense to fuel its transition game, converting 22 points off Iona turnovers while limiting the Gaels to just two points off their own miscues. The Stags also dominated inside, outscoring Iona 44-28 in the paint.

The most critical phase of the game was its inception. Fairfield exploded out of the gate with a 23-point first quarter, establishing a 13-point lead that would only grow. The Stags’ defensive pressure was immediate and disruptive. After Iona’s Adrianna Gonzalez hit an early 3-pointer for a brief 3-2 lead, Fairfield responded with a decisive 12-0 run. The sequence was emblematic of the afternoon: a steal by Kaety L’Amoreaux led to a Meghan Andersen 3-pointer, followed by another Andersen 3 and a Cyanne Coe layup, all facilitated by crisp ball movement and forced Gael errors.

That initial burst effectively decided the contest. Iona, which fell to 14-10, never recovered from the early deficit. The Gaels struggled to find any offensive rhythm against Fairfield’s relentless defense, committing turnovers on consecutive possessions multiple times in the first half. The Stags’ lead ballooned to 40-23 by halftime and grew to as many as 36 points in the second half as they continued to execute efficiently at both ends.

Fairfield’s offense was a model of balance and distribution, led by the backcourt duo of L’Amoreaux and Coe. L’Amoreaux, a guard from Endwell, New York, orchestrated the attack with 15 points and seven assists in 26 minutes. Coe, a 6-foot guard from Bolton, Canada, provided a game-high 16 points to go with four rebounds and three assists. Andersen added 14 points, while Jillian Huerter contributed eight points and five assists. The Stags shot 50 percent from the floor for the game.

Iona’s primary offensive threat was Zoey Ward, who logged 36 minutes and finished with 19 points and eight rebounds. Gonzalez added eight points and eight rebounds, and Naomi Barnwell chipped in seven points. Beyond Ward, however, the Gaels found consistent scoring difficult against a Fairfield defense that contested every pass and shot.

The Stags put the game fully out of reach with a 24-point third quarter, their highest-scoring period of the game. The run was again keyed by defensive stops and unselfish offense, with six different Fairfield players scoring in the quarter. A late layup by Coe just before the third-quarter buzzer pushed the lead to 64-33, ensuring the final period would be a formality.

A crowd of 1,324 watched as Fairfield maintained its intensity into the fourth quarter, with reserves like Keyarah Gregory, who had seven points and two steals, and Christina Pham, who hit a late 3-pointer, extending the advantage.

The victory solidifies Fairfield’s position atop the MAAC standings, continuing a season where they have won 12 of their last 13 games. The Stags next travel to face Mount Saint Mary’s on Thursday. Iona, which has lost two straight following a four-game winning streak, looks to regroup when it hosts Canisius on Thursday.

According to Interstat’s ELO system, Fairfield entered the game with a 98.50 percent probability to win, a projection the Stags fulfilled with a comprehensive performance that highlighted their defensive prowess and offensive cohesion.
