UNC Asheville at Longwood
FARMVILLE, Va. (Interstat) — The Longwood women’s basketball team, riding high in the Big South Conference, will look to complete a regular-season sweep of UNC Asheville when the teams meet Saturday at Willet Hall.
The Lancers (16-6), who sit near the top of the league standings, defeated the visiting Bulldogs 67-58 on Jan. 10. Longwood enters on a strong note after an 88-73 overtime victory over Radford on Wednesday. Guard Malea Brown was instrumental in that win, scoring 19 points with four assists in 39 minutes. Brown also scored 21 points in the first matchup against Asheville this season and is averaging 17.5 points over her last four games.
UNC Asheville (9-14) snapped a two-game skid with a 60-48 road win at Charleston Southern on Wednesday. D’Yanna Maxey led the Bulldogs with 12 points in that contest. The guard will be a key factor if Asheville hopes to reverse its January result against Longwood, though she was held to six points in the prior meeting.
The Bulldogs have struggled on the road this season, while Longwood has established Willet Hall as a formidable venue. The Lancers’ high-powered offense, which has topped 80 points seven times this season, will test an Asheville defense that has shown recent improvement, holding its last three opponents under 65 points.
Saturday’s game is a crucial conference matchup as the regular season enters its final weeks. Longwood aims to solidify its position for a top seed in the upcoming Big South tournament, while UNC Asheville seeks a momentum-building upset to improve its seeding.
Tipoff is scheduled for Saturday afternoon. Following this game, Longwood will travel to face High Point on Wednesday, while UNC Asheville will host Radford.
