Longwood Uses Dominant Second Quarter to Top UNC Asheville

FARMVILLE, Va. (Interstat) — A dominant second-quarter surge propelled the Longwood Lancers to a 72-60 victory over the UNC Asheville Bulldogs in a Big South Conference women’s basketball game Saturday at Willett Hall.

The game, played before a crowd of 1,147, was effectively decided in a decisive 10-minute span before halftime. Trailing 10-9 after a low-scoring first quarter, the Lancers erupted for 27 points in the second period while holding the Bulldogs to 16, turning a one-point deficit into a 36-26 halftime lead they would not relinquish.

Longwood’s offensive efficiency was the story. The Lancers scored 72 points on 72 possessions, an offensive rating of 100.7, while UNC Asheville managed just 60 points on 70 possessions for a rating of 86.3. Longwood capitalized on Asheville’s mistakes, scoring 17 points off 15 Bulldog turnovers, compared to just eight points off turnovers for the visitors.

The Lancers’ balance proved overwhelming. Amor Harris, a guard from Alexandria, Virginia, led all scorers with 17 points, including three 3-pointers. Frances Ulysse of Montreal contributed 13 points and eight rebounds, while Jasmine Peaks added 11 points. Point guard Malea Brown orchestrated the offense with a game-high five assists to go with 10 points, and Jaci Bolden provided a critical spark off the bench with 12 points, all in the second half.

UNC Asheville was led by the interior presence of Nia Green, who finished with 20 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots. Jamaria Freeman posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, adding six assists. Journee McDaniel also grabbed eight rebounds to go with 11 points. The Bulldogs won the battle on the offensive glass, collecting 19 rebounds, but could not convert those extra chances efficiently, shooting just 33.8% from the field.

The most pivotal stretch of the game began with Longwood down 18-16 in the second quarter. The Lancers unleashed a 13-2 run, fueled by transition opportunities and defensive pressure. The run featured a driving layup and a free throw from Ulysse, a layup by Jaci Bolden, and a 3-pointer from Harris. A technical foul assessed to Asheville’s D’Yanna Maxey led to two Jasmine Peaks free throws, and a steal and subsequent free throws by Amor Harris extended the lead to 29-20. Longwood closed the half on another high note, as Harris drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer off a Peaks assist to send the Lancers into the locker room with a 10-point advantage and full momentum.

UNC Asheville made several pushes after halftime, closing to within six points on multiple occasions in the third quarter, but each time Longwood had an answer. A key sequence came early in the fourth quarter with the Lancers leading 54-50. A jumper by Peaks and a 3-pointer from Harris, both assisted by Brown, quickly pushed the lead back to nine. Whenever the Bulldogs threatened, Longwood responded with a critical basket, often from Bolden or Harris, to maintain a comfortable cushion.

With the win, Longwood improved to 17-6 overall and strengthened its position in the conference standings. UNC Asheville fell to 9-15. The Lancers completed a regular-season sweep of the Bulldogs, having also won 67-58 in Asheville on Jan. 10.

Longwood next travels to face High Point on Wednesday. UNC Asheville returns home to host Radford on the same night.
