High Point at Radford

FAIRLAWN, Va. (Interstat) — The surging High Point Panthers, boasting one of the nation’s top records, will look to continue their dominant season when they visit the Radford Highlanders in a Big South Conference women’s basketball matchup Saturday.

High Point (21-2, 10-0 Big South) enters on a 12-game winning streak and has been nearly untouchable in conference play, winning by an average margin of 26.4 points. The Panthers’ juggernaut is led by standout guard Macy Spencer, who is coming off a career-high 38-point performance in an 88-74 road win at Winthrop on Wednesday. In the teams’ first meeting this season, a 78-40 High Point victory on Jan. 10, Spencer scored 23 points in just 23 minutes.

Radford (15-10, 7-3) seeks to protect its home court at the D.N. Dedmon Center and avenge that lopsided loss. The Highlanders had won five straight before a 88-73 overtime defeat at Longwood on Wednesday. Forward Georgia Simonsen has been a consistent scorer for Radford, averaging 13.5 points over her last eight games, including an 18-point, 7-rebound effort in a win over Winthrop on Jan. 31.

The Highlanders’ conference losses have all come against the league’s top tier, falling to High Point and Longwood (twice). Containing Spencer and the efficient Panther offense, which has scored 87 or more points in three of its last five outings, presents the primary challenge. Radford will need a significant defensive improvement after allowing High Point to shoot 50.8% from the field in the January meeting.

Saturday’s contest is a pivotal one for conference positioning. High Point aims to maintain its firm grip on first place, while Radford looks to solidify its standing in the upper half of the Big South and prove it can compete with the league’s elite. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. EST.
