Radford Topples High Point in Big South Women’s Basketball Showdown

FAIRLAWN, Va. (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of fortune from their meeting just a month prior, the Radford Highlanders delivered a commanding defensive performance to hand the High Point Panthers their third loss of the season, 72-57, in a Big South Conference women’s basketball game Saturday at the D.N. Dedmon Center.

The victory, witnessed by 886 fans, avenged a 38-point road loss to High Point on Jan. 10 and snapped the Panthers’ eight-game winning streak. It improved Radford to 16-10 overall, while High Point, which entered as a heavy favorite with a national statistical projection giving them a nearly 75% chance to win, fell to 21-3.

The most important part of the game was Radford’s immediate and overwhelming establishment of control. The Highlanders set the tone from the opening tip, exploiting High Point’s early offensive struggles with a 22-10 first-quarter blitz. Radford’s defense was relentless, generating turnovers and converting them into easy baskets, building a lead that the Panthers, despite several rallies, could never seriously threaten.

Radford’s dominance was built on a balanced offensive attack and stifling team defense that held High Point to just 21 first-half points. The Highlanders consistently beat the Panthers to loose balls, outscoring them 17-14 off turnovers and establishing a 32-24 advantage in points in the paint.

Georgia Simonsen, a 6-foot-1 sophomore from Fairfax, Virginia, was the catalyst for Radford. She filled the stat sheet with 19 points, seven rebounds, three blocks and two assists in just 27 minutes, setting an aggressive tone on both ends. Her early block and defensive presence helped fuel the first-quarter run that decided the game’s trajectory.

She was complemented by a deep supporting cast. Anaiah Jenkins scored 13 points off the bench, including a pair of critical three-pointers. Joi Williams added 12 points, while Kirah Dandridge contributed seven points, six rebounds and steady defense. Ellie Taylor orchestrated the offense with four assists.

For High Point, which had not lost since Dec. 17, the afternoon belonged almost solely to Anna Hager. The junior from Norrbotten, Sweden, carried the offensive load, scoring a game-high 26 points and grabbing six rebounds in 36 minutes. Chana Paxixe provided secondary support with 13 points and five rebounds, but the Panthers’ typically potent attack was held in check.

High Point’s attempts to mount a comeback were repeatedly stifled. After trailing 42-21 at halftime, the Panthers opened the third quarter with increased energy, primarily through Hager, who hit a trio of three-pointers in the period. A late triple by Macy Spencer cut the Radford lead to 57-51 heading into the fourth.

However, any momentum was quickly extinguished. Radford opened the final quarter with a 6-0 spurt, capped by a three-pointer from Joi Williams, to push the lead back to 12. Every subsequent High Point basket was answered, with Simonsen and Taylor hitting key shots to keep the Panthers at bay. A Taylor pull-up jumper with 1:49 remaining gave Radford its largest lead at 72-57, sealing the statement victory.

The loss was a rare misstep for a High Point team that had been rolling through its conference schedule, including the earlier 78-40 demolition of these same Highlanders. Radford, meanwhile, showcased its growth and resilience, proving its January defeat was an aberration.

High Point looks to rebound when it hosts Longwood on Wednesday. Radford, riding a wave of confidence, travels to face UNC Asheville the same night.
