Tarleton State Controls Paint, Defeats Utah Tech in WAC Women’s Basketball
ST. GEORGE, Utah (Interstat) — A dominant defensive performance and a game-high 20 points from guard Jakoriah Long propelled the Tarleton State Texans to a 63-45 victory over the Utah Tech Trailblazers in a Western Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Saturday at Burns Arena.
The Texans, who improved to 11-9 overall, seized control with a stifling first quarter and never relented, holding the Trailblazers to a season-low in points and a frigid 29.6% shooting from the field. Utah Tech, which fell to 6-14, connected on just 8 of 37 attempts from three-point range.
The most critical phase of the game was its outset. Tarleton State established its defensive identity immediately, opening the contest on a 10-0 run over the first five minutes. The Texans’ length and activity disrupted Utah Tech’s offensive sets from the tip, forcing difficult shots and capitalizing on early misses. The Trailblazers did not score until a Lauren Crocker layup at the 7:41 mark of the first quarter, and by then the tone was firmly set.
Tarleton State led 20-11 after the first period and extended its advantage to 30-21 at halftime, despite scoring only 10 points in the second quarter. The Texans’ defense ensured that their own offensive lulls were never costly. Utah Tech struggled to find any consistent rhythm, with Tarleton State’s 14 offensive rebounds leading to a 14-4 advantage in second-chance opportunities and a 20-14 edge in points in the paint.
Long, a 5-foot-7 guard from Waco, Texas, was the offensive catalyst, adding five rebounds and two assists in 31 minutes. She was supported by forward Caroline Lyles, who posted 14 points and nine rebounds, and guard Gia Adams, who contributed 13 points, four rebounds and four assists. Center Elodie Lutbert anchored the interior with seven points, eight rebounds, three assists and a block.
Utah Tech was led by Brie Crittendon’s 15 points, though she was hampered by seven turnovers. Lauren Crocker provided a strong defensive presence with 12 rebounds and four blocks to go with seven points and two assists. Guard Chardonnay Hartley distributed five assists but was held to 2-of-9 shooting from the field.
The Texans’ defensive pressure was quantified by an offensive rating of just 64.1 for Utah Tech, meaning the Trailblazers scored only 64.1 points per 100 possessions. Tarleton State, while not efficient offensively with an 87.3 rating, generated enough extra possessions through its 14 offensive rebounds and eight steals to build and maintain a comfortable lead.
After Utah Tech narrowed the gap to 29-26 early in the third quarter on a Rose Boisnel three-pointer, Tarleton State responded with a decisive 9-0 run, capped by a Jakoriah Long three-pointer, to push the lead back to 12. The Trailblazers would not get within single digits again, as the Texans’ lead ballooned to as many as 21 points in the fourth quarter.
The victory completed a regular-season series sweep for Tarleton State, which defeated Utah Tech 64-60 in Stephenville on Jan. 17. It also snapped a brief two-game skid for the Texans, who lost at Utah Valley on Thursday.
For Utah Tech, the loss extended a difficult stretch, marking their fourth defeat in the last five games. The Trailblazers’ offensive struggles were emblematic of their season, as they have now failed to reach 50 points in three of their last five contests.
Tarleton State will look to build on the road win when it travels to face Abilene Christian on Tuesday. Utah Tech will attempt to regroup on the road at Texas-Arlington next Thursday.
The announced attendance at Burns Arena was 307.
