Eagles Soar Past Bulls in MAC Women’s Basketball Rout
BUFFALO, N.Y. (Interstat) — In a Mid-American Conference women’s basketball matchup that defied pregame projections, the Eastern Michigan Eagles delivered a commanding wire-to-wire victory over the Buffalo Bulls, 71-51, on Wednesday night at Alumni Arena.
The Eagles, improving to 10-9 overall, seized control from the opening tip and never trailed, methodically building a lead that ballooned to as many as 22 points in the second half. The Bulls, who entered the contest with just two wins on the season, fell to 2-18 despite being favored by a significant statistical margin.
Eastern Michigan’s offensive execution was spearheaded by a dominant trio. Junior guard Fernanda Ovalle, from Santiago, Chile, led all scorers with 23 points, showcasing her ability to score at all three levels. She was complemented by the formidable interior presence of sophomore forward Sisi Eleko of Montreal, Canada, who also poured in 19 points while anchoring the Eagles’ defense with multiple rebounds and a key blocked shot.
The engine of the Eagles’ attack, however, was sophomore point guard Ainhoa Cea from Irun, Spain. In a masterful floor-general performance, Cea dished out a career-high 12 assists, repeatedly dissecting the Buffalo defense to set up her teammates for high-percentage looks. Her backcourt mate, sophomore Peyton Hill of St. Louis, Missouri, provided a versatile 19 points, five assists, and a blocked shot, forming a nearly unguardable backcourt combination.
Buffalo, struggling to find consistent offense, was led by freshman guard Aniya Rowe of Geneva, New York, who finished with 13 points and five assists. Junior forward Diann Jackson of Chicago added 10 points, while freshman forward Janyah Bohanon of Cleveland contributed nine points off the bench. The Bulls shot poorly from the field throughout the night, a stark contrast to the efficient, ball-moving attack displayed by the visitors.
The most critical sequence of the game unfolded late in the first quarter, establishing a template for the evening. After Buffalo’s Meg Lucas converted a layup to pull the Bulls within 10-8 with just over five minutes remaining, Eastern Michigan clamped down. The Eagles closed the period on a 9-2 run, fueled by their core players. Cea found Eleko for a layup, Hill assisted Ovalle on a transition jumper, and after a Buffalo turnover, Cea again connected with Ovalle for another basket. The run culminated with Eleko drawing a foul and making a free throw, giving Eastern Michigan a 17-10 lead after one quarter.
This stretch was emblematic of the entire contest: Eastern Michigan answered every modest Buffalo push with immediate, organized responses, primarily through the playmaking of Cea and the scoring of Ovalle and Eleko. The Eagles extended their lead to 31-24 by halftime and then blew the game open in the third quarter, outscoring the Bulls 20-12. A Hill three-pointer, assisted by Cea, followed by another Cea-to-Eleko connection, pushed the advantage to 20 points and effectively ended any doubt about the outcome.
The Eagles’ defense was equally instrumental, forcing 18 Buffalo turnovers and converting them into 19 points. Eastern Michigan also dominated in the paint, outscoring Buffalo 44-26, a direct result of Cea’s precision passing and the finishing ability of Eleko and Ovalle.
The announced attendance was 1,010. Eastern Michigan looks to continue its momentum when it hosts Western Michigan on Saturday. Buffalo will try to regroup on the road at Akron, also on Saturday.
The result marked Eastern Michigan’s third consecutive conference victory, signaling a potential mid-season surge for the Eagles. For Buffalo, the loss extended a difficult season, highlighting the gap between statistical expectation and on-court performance on this night.
