Eastern Michigan Rallies Past Toledo in MAC Women’s Basketball

YPSILANTI, Mich. (Interstat) — Peyton Hill scored 25 points and the Eastern Michigan Eagles closed the game on a 14-3 run over the final three minutes to stun the Toledo Rockets 76-71 in a Mid-American Conference women’s basketball game on Tuesday night at the Convocation Center.

The Eagles, who trailed by as many as 11 points in the third quarter and were down 68-62 with just over three minutes to play, mounted a furious comeback fueled by defense and clutch free-throw shooting. Eastern Michigan scored 26 points in the fourth quarter, with 16 coming from the foul line on 19 attempts.

Hill, a 5-foot-10 guard from St. Louis, was the catalyst, scoring 11 of her game-high 25 points in the final period. Her driving layup with 2:48 left sparked the decisive run, and she calmly sank four consecutive free throws in the final 35 seconds to seal the victory. She added a steal and a block in 38 minutes of action.

Fernanda Ovalle of Santiago, Chile, added 20 points for Eastern Michigan, including a crucial three-pointer with 2:06 remaining that cut Toledo’s lead to 68-65. Sisi Eleko of Montreal contributed 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for a double-double, while Spanish guard Ainhoa Cea directed the offense with six assists.

Toledo was led by the backcourt duo of Patricia Anumgba and Faith Fedd-Robinson. Anumgba, from Silver Spring, Maryland, scored 22 points, hitting four three-pointers. Fedd-Robinson, of Newark, New Jersey, added 19 points. Miriam Diala of Heidelberg, Germany, chipped in 10 points for the Rockets.

The most important part of the game was Eastern Michigan’s defensive stand and composure in the closing minutes. After an Anumgba three-pointer gave Toledo a 68-62 advantage, the Eagles locked down, forcing three critical Toledo turnovers and holding the Rockets to just one field goal over the final 3:24. Eastern Michigan capitalized on the other end by relentlessly attacking the basket, drawing fouls, and converting at the line, going a perfect 8-for-8 on free throws in the last 35 seconds.

The game was a tale of contrasting efficiencies. While both teams shot an identical 28 field goals, Eastern Michigan’s superior work at the charity stripe proved decisive. The Eagles made 16 of 19 free throws, while Toledo connected on just 6 of 12. Eastern Michigan also committed only 11 turnovers compared to Toledo’s 15, leading to a more efficient offensive rating of 113.4 points per 100 possessions against Toledo’s 103.3.

The victory snapped a four-game losing streak for Eastern Michigan, improving its record to 8-9 overall. Toledo, which had won two straight, fell to 8-8. The result was a significant upset according to advanced metrics, as Interstat’s ELO system had projected Toledo with an 89.9 percent probability to win.

Eastern Michigan started slowly, trailing 15-13 after the first quarter and 34-30 at halftime. Toledo built its largest lead at 52-41 midway through the third quarter behind Anumgba’s sharp shooting, but the Eagles chipped away, entering the final period down just 56-50 before erupting for the game-winning run.

The announced attendance at the Convocation Center was 1,105.

Eastern Michigan next hosts Northern Illinois on Saturday. Toledo travels to face Ohio on Saturday.
