Utah Tech Edged by Tarleton State in Tight WAC Contest
STEPHENVILLE, Texas (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive stands and missed opportunities, the Tarleton State Texans edged the Utah Tech Trailblazers 64-60 in a Western Athletic Conference women’s basketball clash Saturday at Wisdom Gym.
The contest, played before 772 fans, was a grinding affair where neither team led by more than nine points. Tarleton State improved to 9-8 overall, while Utah Tech fell to 6-10.
The decisive sequence unfolded in the final minute with the Texans clinging to a 62-60 lead. After a Utah Tech timeout with 57.7 seconds remaining, the Trailblazers’ Lauren Crocker was fouled and sent to the line for two shots with a chance to tie. The 6-foot-4 center from Calgary, Alberta, missed the first but made the second, trimming the deficit to one.
On the ensuing possession, Tarleton State worked the clock before finding Tessa Engelman on the left baseline. The 6-foot-2 forward from Calgary, Canada, created space with a stepback jumper and sank the shot with eight seconds left, pushing the Texans’ lead to 64-60 and effectively sealing the victory. Utah Tech’s last-gasp three-point attempt was off the mark.
Engelman’s clutch basket capped a strong performance where she scored 12 points and grabbed key defensive rebounds late. The Texans were led by Jakoriah Long, a 5-foot-7 guard from Waco, Texas, who played 36 minutes and scored a game-high 17 points, including a critical three-pointer with 4:46 remaining that gave Tarleton State a 57-54 lead it would not relinquish. Shadasia Brackens added 11 points and two blocks for the home side.
Utah Tech, which led 31-30 at halftime, was paced by a balanced attack. Chardonnay Hartley, a 5-foot-3 guard from Harlem, New York, had 12 points and five assists. Brie Crittendon of Union, Kentucky, and Kaylee Borden of Anadarko, Oklahoma, each added 10 points, while Paige Cofer of Eagle, Idaho, also finished with 10.
The Trailblazers’ offense struggled with efficiency, shooting just 36.5% from the field and a costly 50% from the free-throw line. They also committed 11 turnovers, which Tarleton State converted into key transition opportunities. The Texans, while shooting 41% from the field, won the battle on the glass with 12 offensive rebounds leading to 13 second-chance points.
Defensively, Utah Tech’s interior presence was notable, blocking six shots, with Crocker swatting four and Calyn Dallas adding one. However, Tarleton State’s defense was equally disruptive, forcing seven steals and limiting Utah Tech’s ball movement to just seven total assists.
The game began at a deliberate pace, with both teams trading baskets and leads throughout the first half. Utah Tech used an 8-0 run late in the second quarter, capped by a Chardonnay Hartley layup, to take its slim halftime advantage.
The third quarter saw the Trailblazers extend their lead to as many as five points, but the Texans closed the period on a 7-2 run, including a three-pointer from Mar’Cyah Willis at the buzzer, to knot the score at 46-46 heading into the final frame.
The fourth quarter featured five ties and three lead changes. With the score tied at 54-54, Long hit her pivotal three-pointer to ignite a 7-0 Tarleton State run that gave the Texans enough cushion to withstand Utah Tech’s final push, which was ultimately answered by Engelman’s late-game heroics.
According to Interstat’s ELO system, Tarleton State entered the game with an 88.30 percent probability to win.
Utah Tech continues its conference schedule on the road at Southern Utah on Jan. 24. Tarleton State returns to action at home against Texas-Arlington on Jan. 21.
