Manhattan Holds Off Mount Saint Mary’s in Women’s Basketball
NEW YORK (Interstat) — In a game defined by a decisive third-quarter surge, the Manhattan Lady Jaspers secured a 68-59 victory over the Mount Saint Mary’s Mountaineers in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women’s basketball matchup Wednesday afternoon at Draddy Gymnasium.
A crowd of 1,625 watched as Manhattan, which led by just three points at halftime, opened the second half with stifling defense and a critical 9-2 run to create a separation that Mount Saint Mary’s could never fully erase. The win improved Manhattan’s record to 4-12 overall, while Mount Saint Mary’s fell to 7-9.
The most pivotal stretch of the contest began immediately after the intermission. With Manhattan leading 28-25, the Lady Jaspers’ interior defense, anchored by 6-foot-4 center Colette Mulderig and 6-foot-2 forward Kristina Juric, took over. On Mount Saint Mary’s first two possessions of the third quarter, Juric and Mulderig combined for three consecutive blocked shots, setting an immediate physical tone. Manhattan capitalized on the other end, with Mulderig scoring on a turnaround jumper off an Elisa Solé Sanchez assist to extend the lead to five.
Mount Saint Mary’s, struggling to find any offensive rhythm against the heightened defensive pressure, managed only a single Amber Bullard layup in the first four and a half minutes of the quarter. Meanwhile, Manhattan methodically built its advantage. A driving layup from Juric, another Mulderig jumper, and free throws from Hana Mühl pushed the Lady Jaspers’ lead to 37-27 with 6:41 remaining in the period. The Mountaineers, who shot just 13 points in the quarter, never got closer than seven points for the remainder of the game.
The Lady Jaspers were led by a dominant performance from Kristina Juric of Zagreb, Croatia. The sophomore forward scored a game-high 22 points, grabbed four rebounds and blocked four shots, her presence felt most acutely during the game-changing defensive stand. Fellow international standout Elisa Solé Sanchez, from Sant Andreu de Llavaneres, Spain, orchestrated the offense with 18 points and a game-high seven assists.
Manhattan also received a balanced contribution from its backcourt. Brianna Davis, a hometown player from the Bronx, added 10 points and four assists, while Croatian guard Hana Mühl logged 37 minutes, contributing seven points and six assists. Colette Mulderig of Scranton, Pennsylvania, provided a crucial double-double with 10 points, four rebounds and four blocks.
Mount Saint Mary’s was paced by Amber Bullard of Philadelphia, who fought inside for 16 points. Alana Powell of Haymarket, Virginia, added 10 points. The Mountaineers showed resilience in the fourth quarter, scoring 22 points, but each time they threatened, Manhattan answered with a key basket, often from Juric or Solé Sanchez.
The first half was a tightly contested affair, featuring nine lead changes and five ties. Mount Saint Mary’s held an early 12-10 lead late in the first quarter before a 5-0 Manhattan spurt gave the Lady Jaspers a 15-12 edge after one. The Mountaineers’ defense kept them in the game in the second quarter, forcing eight Manhattan turnovers, but they could not forge ahead, trailing 28-25 at the break.
The victory gives Manhattan its third win in its last four conference games following a difficult non-conference slate. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Manhattan entered the game with a 55.7 percent probability to win. Mount Saint Mary’s had won two of its last three coming into the contest.
Manhattan next travels to face Fairfield on Saturday. Mount Saint Mary’s returns home to host Canisius on Saturday.
