UNC Asheville Tops Gardner-Webb in Big South Women’s Basketball
SHELBY, N.C. (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive pressure and offensive struggles, the UNC Asheville women’s basketball team secured a rare road victory Wednesday night, defeating Gardner-Webb 62-51 at Paul Porter Arena in a Big South Conference matchup.
The visiting Bulldogs, who entered the contest with a 5-10 record and were given only an 11.4% chance to win by a national statistical projection system, used a dominant third quarter to pull away from the Runnin’ Bulldogs. The win improved UNC Asheville to 6-10 overall, while Gardner-Webb fell to 4-12.
The most important part of the game unfolded in the third quarter. UNC Asheville entered halftime with a narrow 27-23 lead after a low-scoring first half. The Bulldogs then erupted for 23 points in the third period, their highest-scoring quarter of the night, while holding Gardner-Webb to 17. This 10-minute stretch effectively decided the contest, turning a tense four-point advantage into a more comfortable double-digit margin that Gardner-Webb could not overcome in the final quarter.
The game was a defensive battle marked by frequent turnovers. UNC Asheville committed 26 turnovers, while Gardner-Webb gave the ball away 17 times. Both teams recorded 11 steals, highlighting the disruptive nature of the defenses. Offensive efficiency was hard to come by, as UNC Asheville posted an offensive rating of 87.6 points per 100 possessions, and Gardner-Webb managed just 75.3.
Despite the sloppy play, UNC Asheville found scoring from its key players. Nia Green, a 6-foot sophomore from Baltimore, led the Bulldogs with 18 points, adding three assists and three steals in 33 minutes. Guard D’Yanna Maxey of Atlanta contributed 14 points, while Journee McDaniel of New Bern chipped in eight points, four assists and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Gardner-Webb was paced by Anaya Harris of Raleigh, who scored a game-high 20 points. Amina Gray added 13 points for the Runnin’ Bulldogs, who struggled mightily from beyond the arc, connecting on just 7 of 28 three-point attempts. UNC Asheville was not much better, shooting 5 of 17 from deep.
The Bulldogs controlled the interior, outrebounding Gardner-Webb 45-34 overall and grabbing 15 offensive boards. They also shot a more efficient 45.5% from the field on 25-of-55 shooting, compared to Gardner-Webb’s 30.9% (17 of 55).
The victory snapped a two-game conference losing streak for UNC Asheville, which had lost to High Point and Winthrop in its previous two outings. For Gardner-Webb, the loss continued a difficult season, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs have now dropped four of their last five games.
Attendance at Paul Porter Arena was announced at 875.
UNC Asheville returns home to face Longwood on Saturday. Gardner-Webb will host South Carolina Upstate, also on Saturday. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in a rematch in Asheville on Jan. 31.
