Eastern Michigan Outlasts Bowling Green in High-Scoring MAC Affair
YPSILANTI, Mich. (Interstat) — In a high-scoring Mid-American Conference women’s basketball clash defined by offensive runs and a standout individual performance, the Eastern Michigan Eagles outlasted the Bowling Green Falcons 86-76 on Tuesday night at the Convocation Center.
The game’s most pivotal sequence arrived late in the third quarter and bled into the fourth, transforming a tight contest into a double-digit Eastern Michigan lead that Bowling Green could never fully erase. With the Eagles holding a 56-50 advantage entering the final period, they unleashed a decisive 10-2 run over the first four minutes. The surge was fueled by Peyton Hill, who converted a three-point play, and capped by a Brooklyn Thrash 3-pointer, pushing the margin to 66-52 and forcing Bowling Green into a reactive mode for the remainder of the game.
The Falcons, who entered as heavy favorites according to predictive metrics, showed resilience with a 27-point fourth-quarter outburst but could not consistently string together defensive stops to mount a sustained comeback. Every Bowling Green push was answered, often by Fernanda Ovalle, whose game-high 26 points provided the consistent offensive engine for the Eagles.
Eastern Michigan improved to 7-5 overall, while Bowling Green fell to 8-5. An announced crowd of 1,441 saw the home team control the interior, outscoring the Falcons 34-28 in the paint, and capitalize more efficiently on mistakes, scoring 16 points off turnovers compared to Bowling Green’s 10.
The contest began at a frantic pace, with both teams trading baskets in an opening quarter that saw Eastern Michigan take a slim 21-20 lead. Bowling Green’s Paige Kohler and Kaia Woods found early success, but the Eagles’ inside presence, led by Sisi Eleko, established an early tone. The Falcons steadied themselves in the second quarter, leveraging their perimeter game to build a multi-possession lead before Eastern Michigan closed the half strong, trailing just 39-37 at the break.
The third quarter proved to be the turning point. After Bowling Green drew even, Eastern Michigan methodically built its lead behind the trio of Ovalle, Eleko, and Hill. The Falcons’ offense stagnated, managing only 10 points in the quarter on a series of missed shots and turnovers that the Eagles converted into transition opportunities. That set the stage for the early fourth-quarter knockout punch.
Ovalle’s 26-point effort for Eastern Michigan was complemented by significant contributions across the lineup. Hill added 22 points, while Eleko dominated the low post with 20 points and Ainhoa Cea orchestrated the offense with 10 points and six assists. Thrash played the entire 40 minutes, adding six points, a block, and a steal.
Bowling Green was led by Kohler’s 18 points and Woods’ 15 points and four assists. Johnea Donahue and Lauren Gerken each chipped in 10 points, but the Falcons lacked the consistent secondary scoring needed to match Eastern Michigan’s balanced and persistent attack.
The loss snaps a four-game winning streak for Bowling Green, which had posted several dominant non-conference victories prior to league play. Eastern Michigan, meanwhile, secured a momentum-building conference win after a narrow road loss to Ball State in its previous outing.
Bowling Green looks to rebound at home against Central Michigan on Saturday. Eastern Michigan continues its MAC schedule on the road at Ohio next Wednesday.
