Eastern Michigan Tops Detroit for Road Win

DETROIT (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by missed shots and turnovers, the Eastern Michigan Eagles grinded out a victory over the Detroit Titans, 64-55, in a non-conference women’s basketball game Sunday at Calihan Hall.

The Eagles improved to 4-3 on the season, while the Titans fell to 1-5.

The game was far from an offensive showcase. Eastern Michigan secured the win through superior work on the glass and by capitalizing on key scoring runs at critical moments. The Eagles dominated the offensive boards, pulling down 13 rebounds on their own end compared to just six for Detroit. This second-chance opportunity proved vital in a game where both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm.

Eastern Michigan shot 43.9 percent from the field, while Detroit was held to 41.5 percent. Both teams were cold from beyond the arc, with the Eagles making 4 of 18 attempts and the Titans connecting on just 3 of 15. The teams were nearly inseparable in other statistical categories, each committing 19 turnovers, but Eastern Michigan’s rebounding edge provided the crucial difference.

Peyton Hill led all scorers for Eastern Michigan, pouring in 21 points. The guard from St. Louis, Missouri, was instrumental down the stretch, making critical free throws to help seal the game. She also added three rebounds in 35 minutes of action.

The Eagles’ interior presence was anchored by Sisi Eleko of Montreal, Canada. The 6-foot-2 forward recorded a double-double with 15 points and eight rebounds, consistently challenging the Detroit defense. Guard Ainhoa Cea from Irun, Spain, facilitated the offense, dishing out four assists to go with six points and seven rebounds in a team-high 38 minutes.

Fernanda Ovalle of Santiago, Chile, provided a significant spark off the bench for Eastern Michigan, scoring 12 points and grabbing three rebounds.

Detroit was led by a balanced scoring effort. Nisea Burrell, a guard from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, topped the Titans with 15 points. Makayla Jackson of Alexandria, Virginia, added 14 points, two rebounds and two assists, while Jasmine Edwards contributed 11 points and four rebounds.

The game remained tight throughout the first half, with neither team able to establish a significant lead. Eastern Michigan began to create separation in the second half, using its rebounding advantage to generate extra possessions and slowly build a cushion that Detroit could not overcome.

The Titans, who were projected as strong favorites by advanced statistical metrics before the game, were unable to solve the Eastern Michigan defense consistently enough to mount a sustained comeback in the final period.

Eastern Michigan will look to build on the victory when it returns home to face Defiance on Friday. Detroit will seek to end its losing skid when it hosts Cleveland State on Thursday.
