Texas State at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (Interstat) — Saniya Burks scored a game-high 21 points as the Texas State Bobcats snapped a four-game losing streak with a 53-43 victory over the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders in a non-conference women’s basketball game Thursday afternoon at the American Bank Center.
The Bobcats, who improved to 1-4, used a dominant first half to build a commanding lead. They held the Islanders to just 15 points through the first two quarters, taking a 36-15 advantage into halftime. Texas State opened the game on a 14-0 run before the Islanders got on the board and led 14-7 after the first quarter. The Bobcats then outscored the Islanders 22-8 in the second period.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, which fell to 1-3, mounted a significant comeback in the third quarter. The Islanders exploded for 24 points in the period, outscoring Texas State by 13 to cut the deficit to 47-39 heading into the final quarter. However, the Islanders’ offense went cold again in the fourth, managing only four points as the Bobcats held on for the win.
Kyra Anderson provided a strong all-around performance for Texas State, contributing 9 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 blocks. Kyla McBride also added 9 points for the Bobcats.
K’Nari Holliday led the Islanders with 14 points, while Samora Watson chipped in 9 points and 4 rebounds. The Islanders’ rally in the third quarter was not enough to overcome their frigid start and finish.
Texas State will look to build on the victory when it hosts Tarleton State on Tuesday. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will try to rebound on the road Monday at Oklahoma State. An announced crowd of 1,400 attended the game at American Bank Center.
