Texas State Holds Off Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Rally for First Win
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by scoring droughts, the Texas State Bobcats secured their first victory of the season, holding off a late surge to defeat the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders 53-43 in a non-conference women’s basketball game Thursday afternoon at the American Bank Center.
A crowd of 1,400 watched as the Bobcats, who led by as many as 21 points, saw their advantage nearly evaporate in the third quarter before clamping down defensively in the final period to seal the win. The victory improved Texas State’s record to 1-4, while the Islanders fell to 1-3.
The game was a tale of two halves, and nearly two different games entirely. Texas State established control from the opening tip, using a stifling defense to build a 14-7 lead after the first quarter. The Bobcats’ dominance continued in the second period, where they outscored the Islanders 22-8 to take a commanding 36-15 lead into halftime. The Islanders’ 15 first-half points were a result of frigid shooting and 12 turnovers, which the Bobcats consistently converted into opportunities.
However, the momentum shifted dramatically after the break. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi emerged from the locker room with renewed energy, unleashing a 24-11 third-quarter run that brought them back into contention. The Islanders’ offense, stagnant for the first 20 minutes, suddenly found its rhythm, cutting the once-imposing deficit to just eight points heading into the final quarter.
The comeback was spearheaded by a surge in three-point shooting and aggressive drives to the basket that put the Texas State defense on its heels. The Bobcats, who had been efficient in the first half, went cold, managing only six points in the fourth quarter.
But just as the Islanders threatened to complete the comeback, the Texas State defense rediscovered its first-half form. The Bobcats held Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to a mere four points in the final quarter, shutting down their offensive sets and securing crucial rebounds to halt the rally.
Saniya Burks was the offensive engine for Texas State, carrying the scoring load with a game-high 21 points. The guard from Mexia, Texas, also contributed three rebounds, an assist, a block and a steal in 36 minutes of action, providing a steadying presence during the Islanders’ second-half charge.
Kyra Anderson of Texas State was a force on both ends of the court. The 6-foot-1 forward from Huntington, Texas, filled the stat sheet with nine points, seven rebounds, three assists and three blocks, using her length to disrupt the Islanders’ interior game.
For Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, K’Nari Holliday led the way with 14 points and three rebounds. Her activity in the paint was a key factor in the team’s third-quarter resurgence. Teammate Samora Watson added nine points, four rebounds and two assists.
The win provides a much-needed boost for Texas State after a difficult start to the season that included losses to Texas Tech, Texas-San Antonio, Ohio and Texas-Rio Grande Valley. The Bobcats will look to build on the victory when they host Tarleton State on Tuesday, Nov. 25.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, which entered the game as a statistical favorite according to Interstat’s ELO system, will aim to regroup quickly. Their schedule does not get easier, as they hit the road for their next game against Oklahoma State on Monday, Nov. 24. The Islanders’ previous games this season included a win over Biblical Studies and losses to Texas A&M and Santa Clara.
