Indiana State at Austin Peay

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — In a game defined by turnovers and a frantic fourth-quarter rally, the Austin Peay Governors edged the Indiana State Sycamores 77 to 73 in a non-conference women’s basketball matchup Sunday at the Winfield Dunn Center.

Despite a sloppy performance from both sides that featured 45 combined turnovers, Austin Peay used a dominant final period to overcome a late deficit and secure the victory in front of 536 fans. The Governors outscored the Sycamores 27 to 19 in the fourth quarter to improve their season record to 2-1, while Indiana State fell to an even 2-2.

The game was a back-and-forth affair from the start. Austin Peay established an early lead, closing the first quarter ahead 21 to 14 behind efficient scoring. Indiana State, however, chipped away in the second quarter and surged in the third, outscoring the Governors 22 to 14 to take a 54 to 50 lead heading into the final frame.

Indiana State’s offense was fueled by strong individual performances. Jayci Allen, a guard from Richmond, Indiana, led all scorers with 19 points, including three shots from beyond the arc. Fellow guard Tierney Kelsey of Memphis, Tennessee, provided a significant offensive punch with 18 points. In the post, Clemisha Prackett from West Memphis, Arkansas, recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, adding a block in 29 minutes of action. Kennedy Claybrooks facilitated the offense, dishing out a game-high seven assists.

Austin Peay’s victory was a product of balanced scoring and clutch plays down the stretch. Veronaye Charlton, a guard from Nassau, Bahamas, led the Governors with 15 points, four rebounds, and four assists. Her backcourt partner, Jim’Miyah Branton of Miami, Florida, added 10 points, four rebounds, and four assists. Key contributions came from Anovia Sheals of Daytona Beach, Florida, who tallied 14 points, five rebounds, and four assists, and Kyra Perkins of Morrison, Tennessee, who scored 13 points and grabbed five rebounds.

The Sycamores were efficient from the field, shooting 47.3 percent on 26-of-55 shooting, and nearly perfect from the free-throw line, converting 16 of 17 attempts. However, they were hampered by 22 turnovers, which Austin Peay converted into critical scoring opportunities. The Governors capitalized on their trips to the line, making 22 of 31 free throws, a key factor in the tight contest.

Austin Peay also won the battle on the glass, securing 12 offensive rebounds to Indiana State’s eight, which led to crucial second-chance points, especially during their fourth-quarter run.

The game’s outcome flipped the script on preseason projections, as Indiana State entered the contest having won two of its first three games, including a 90 to 69 victory over Eastern Illinois. Austin Peay was looking to bounce back from a 75 to 65 loss to Vanderbilt in its previous outing.

Looking ahead, Indiana State travels to face SIU Edwardsville on Wednesday. Austin Peay’s next contest is on the road Thursday against Chattanooga.
