Austin Peay Rallies Past Indiana State in Women’s Basketball

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — In a game defined by chaotic momentum swings and a staggering 45 combined turnovers, the Austin Peay Governors mounted a furious fourth-quarter comeback to defeat the Indiana State Sycamores 77-73 in a non-conference women’s basketball game Sunday at the Winfield Dunn Center.

The Governors, playing in front of an announced crowd of 536, erased a nine-point deficit entering the final period, outscoring the Sycamores 27-19 in the fourth quarter to secure the victory. The win improved Austin Peay’s record to 2-1, while Indiana State fell to an even 2-2.

The game’s outcome was ultimately decided at the free-throw line, where Austin Peay attempted nearly twice as many shots as Indiana State. The Governors converted 22 of their 31 attempts from the charity stripe, a crucial advantage in a tight contest. Indiana State was remarkably efficient from the line, making 16 of 17, but its inability to get there as frequently proved costly. The Sycamores’ offensive rhythm was further disrupted by 22 turnovers.

Austin Peay’s victory was fueled by a balanced scoring attack and clutch plays down the stretch. Veronaye Charlton, a 5-foot-4 guard from Nassau, Bahamas, led the Governors with 15 points, including four critical free throws in the final minute to seal the game. She added four rebounds and four assists in 33 minutes of action.

She was supported by a strong frontcourt presence. Anovia Sheals of Daytona Beach, Florida, scored 14 points and grabbed five rebounds, while Kyra Perkins, a local product from Morrison, Tennessee, contributed 13 points and five rebounds. Jim’Miyah Branton and Mya Williams each chipped in 10 points for a Governors squad that saw five players reach double figures.

Despite the loss, Indiana State was carried by the high-scoring duo of Jayci Allen and Tierney Kelsey. Allen, a 5-10 guard from Richmond, Indiana, poured in a game-high 19 points, demonstrating sharp shooting from beyond the arc. Kelsey, a 5-6 guard from Memphis, Tennessee, was equally potent, scoring 18 points. The Sycamores’ primary facilitator was Kennedy Claybrooks, who dished out seven assists to go with seven points.

The game began at a frantic pace, with both teams struggling to maintain possession. Austin Peay established an early lead, closing the first quarter with a burst to take a 21-14 advantage. The Sycamores responded in the second period, tightening their defense and outscoring the Governors 18-15 to narrow the gap to 36-32 at halftime.

Indiana State carried that momentum into the third quarter, putting together their most efficient stretch of the game. They exploded for 22 points while holding Austin Peay to just 14, seemingly taking control with a 54-50 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.

However, the fourth quarter belonged entirely to the home team. Austin Peay methodically chipped away at the lead, capitalizing on Indiana State miscues and earning repeated trips to the free-throw line. The game see-sawed in the final minutes, with ties and lead changes becoming commonplace. With the score knotted and under a minute to play, Austin Peay’s defense forced key turnovers, and Charlton’s composure at the line ultimately delivered the four-point victory.

Beyond the turnover battle, the game was remarkably even statistically. Both teams shot nearly 47% from the floor and recorded nine assists and nine steals. Austin Peay held a slight rebounding edge, particularly on the offensive glass where they secured 12 rebounds leading to second-chance opportunities. Indiana State’s Clemisha Prackett, a 6-1 forward from West Memphis, Arkansas, was a force inside, tallying a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

The game was a tale of efficiency on possession. Austin Peay scored 77 points on 77 possessions for an offensive rating of 100.4, while Indiana State managed 73 points on the same number of possessions for a rating of 94.7.

Indiana State will look to rebound on the road against SIU Edwardsville on Wednesday. Austin Peay also hits the road for its next contest, traveling to face Chattanooga on Thursday.
