East Carolina at High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C. (Interstat) — Aaliyah Collins scored 27 points and dished out seven assists to lead the High Point Panthers to an 84-68 victory over the East Carolina Pirates in a non-conference women’s basketball game Sunday at Qubein Arena.

The Panthers remained undefeated on the season, improving to 4-0, while the Pirates evened their record at 2-2.

High Point seized control of the game from the opening tip, racing out to a 24-8 lead after the first quarter. The Panthers shot a blistering 9 for 20 from three-point range for the game and capitalized on East Carolina’s mistakes, scoring 21 points off 14 Pirates turnovers. East Carolina, by contrast, managed just four points off nine High Point turnovers.

Macy Spencer provided a significant scoring boost for High Point, adding 20 points. Anna Hager contributed 11 points and seven rebounds, while Nevaeh Zavala anchored the defense with three blocks.

Despite the early deficit, East Carolina mounted a challenge, outscoring High Point 27-22 in the third quarter to narrow the gap. The Pirates were led by Anzhane’ Hutton, who recorded a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds, along with two blocks. Kennedy Fauntleroy added 17 points for the visitors.

However, the Panthers’ efficient offense proved too much to overcome. High Point shot 29 of 54 from the floor, an efficiency rate of 53.7 percent, and posted an offensive rating of 114.5. East Carolina struggled with its shooting, making just 24 of 69 field goal attempts for a 34.8 percent clip and an offensive rating of 92.5.

A key disparity came on the glass, where East Carolina dominated the offensive boards, pulling down 18 rebounds to High Point’s two. Yet, the Panthers’ ability to force turnovers and convert them into points, combined with their superior ball movement evidenced by seven team assists to East Carolina’s two, ultimately secured the win.

The Panthers closed the game strong, scoring 23 points in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.

An announced crowd of 967 attended the game.

East Carolina’s next game is at home against Old Dominion on Friday. High Point will host Vermont on Wednesday.
