Richmond at Texas

AUSTIN, Texas (Interstat) — The No. X Texas women’s basketball team used a dominant third-quarter surge to pull away from the Richmond Spiders, securing an 85-56 victory in a non-conference matchup Friday night at the Frank Erwin Center.

A crowd of 8,747 watched as the Longhorns, fueled by a stifling defense and a balanced scoring attack, improved their record to 2-0. Richmond, coming off a season-opening win, fell to 1-1.

The game was competitive through the first half. Richmond, led by Maggie Doogan’s early efforts, held a 16-14 lead after the first quarter. The Spiders’ offense, however, went cold in the second period, managing only eight points. Texas capitalized, outscoring Richmond 21-8 to take a 35-24 lead into halftime.

Any hope of a Richmond comeback was extinguished in the third quarter. The Longhorns exploded for 31 points, nearly doubling their halftime total in a single period. The defensive pressure intensified, forcing a series of Spider turnovers that Texas converted into easy transition baskets. By the time the quarter ended, Texas had built an insurmountable 66-43 advantage.

Madison Booker led the Longhorns with a commanding double-double, scoring 22 points and grabbing 12 rebounds in just 29 minutes of play. She also added four assists and two blocks. Jordan Lee provided 16 points, while Aaliyah Crump came off the bench to contribute 14 points.

For Richmond, Maggie Doogan was the standout performer, matching Booker’s 22 points while adding seven rebounds and five assists in 36 minutes. Tierra Simon provided a spark with seven points and five rebounds.

The statistical sheet underscored Texas’s comprehensive performance. The Longhorns shot 54.7 percent from the floor compared to Richmond’s 40.7 percent. Texas also forced 24 Spider turnovers, converting them into 26 points, while committing only 10 turnovers themselves. The Longhorns’ defense also registered 15 steals.

Texas controlled the interior, outrebounding Richmond 42-30 and scoring 38 points in the paint. Despite struggling from the free-throw line, making only 11 of 24 attempts, their efficiency from the field and relentless defensive pressure proved more than enough.

Texas next hosts Louisiana-Lafayette on Monday. Richmond looks to rebound when it travels to face William & Mary on Wednesday.
