IU Indy Rallies Past Wright State in Horizon League Matchup

FAIRBORN, Ohio (Interstat) — In a Horizon League women’s basketball matchup defined by turnovers and tenacity, the IU Indy Jaguars used a decisive fourth-quarter surge to secure a 73-63 victory over the Wright State Raiders on Saturday at the Ervin J. Nutter Center.

The game, played before an announced crowd of 1,164, saw the visiting Jaguars improve to 10-13 overall, while the Raiders fell to 7-18.

The contest was a sloppy affair from the outset, with both teams struggling to maintain possession. IU Indy committed 20 turnovers, which Wright State converted into 28 points. The Raiders, however, were scarcely more careful, giving the ball away 15 times, leading to 16 Jaguar points. Despite the miscues, IU Indy’s ability to capitalize on second chances proved critical. The Jaguars dominated the offensive glass, hauling in 17 offensive rebounds to Wright State’s six, which helped offset their own giveaways.

The first half was a back-and-forth struggle. IU Indy built an early lead behind sharp three-point shooting, hitting three from beyond the arc in the opening quarter to take a 17-15 lead. The second quarter was equally tight, with Wright State’s Breezie Williams heating up. The Raiders guard from Canton, Ohio, scored 10 of her game-high 21 points in the period, helping her team edge ahead at times. A three-pointer from Wright State’s Rylee Sagester in the final minute of the half gave the Raiders a 32-30 lead heading into the break.

The third quarter continued the pattern of narrow margins. Wright State maintained a slight advantage, stretching its lead to as many as five points. Lauren Scott’s three-pointer with 6:16 left in the quarter put the Raiders up 38-33. IU Indy responded with key contributions from its bench. Ariana Williams of Chicago hit a three-pointer and a layup in a personal five-point burst, and Sydney Bolden of Loganville, Georgia, added a three of her own to keep the Jaguars within striking distance. The Raiders took a 49-48 lead into the final period, setting the stage for the game’s pivotal stretch.

The most important part of the game unfolded in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter. IU Indy’s Nevaeh Foster, a guard from South Bend, Indiana, took over. She buried consecutive three-pointers in the first 90 seconds of the period, the second assisted by Destini Craig of Fort Wayne, Indiana. That quick six-point outburst gave the Jaguars a 54-49 lead and forced a Wright State timeout just 1:32 into the quarter.

Wright State never fully recovered from that sudden shift. The Raiders, who had led for much of the second and third quarters, saw their offensive flow stutter. They managed just two field goals in the first seven minutes of the final period. IU Indy, meanwhile, continued to attack. Craig completed a three-point play, and Hailey Smith of Fishers, Indiana, added a putback layup to extend the lead to 61-55 with 5:57 remaining.

Wright State made one final push. A three-pointer from Lauren Scott of Worthington, Ohio, cut the deficit to 62-60 with 3:05 to play. But the Jaguars sealed the game at the free-throw line and with defensive stops. IU Indy went 9 for 12 from the line in the fourth quarter, while Wright State managed only one field goal in the final three minutes—a Scott three-pointer that represented their last points of the game with 3:05 left.

Foster led the Jaguars with 17 points, including three crucial three-pointers, and added three assists. Smith posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, along with a block. Craig and Ariana Williams each added 10 points. For Wright State, Breezie Williams led all scorers with 21 points, four rebounds and four assists. Lauren Scott finished with 12 points, and Claire Henson of Germantown, Ohio, contributed eight points and seven rebounds.

Statistically, the game was a study in contrasts. IU Indy won despite shooting just 38.2% from the field (21 of 55), leaning on an 11-for-25 performance from three-point range and a 20-for-28 effort at the free-throw line. Wright State shot a slightly better 40.7% (22 of 54) but attempted only 13 free throws, making 11. The Jaguars’ significant advantage in offensive rebounds led to a 17-6 edge in second-chance points, a key factor in overcoming their turnover woes.

The victory gave IU Indy a regular-season sweep of the Raiders, having also won 70-59 in Indianapolis on Jan. 11. The Jaguars next host Oakland on Wednesday. Wright State travels to Detroit on Thursday.
