Late Rally Lifts IU Indy Women Past Northern Kentucky in Horizon League Matchup
INDIANAPOLIS (Interstat) — In a game defined by dramatic momentum swings and a frantic final minute, Olivia Smith’s clutch performance at the free-throw line lifted the IU Indy Jaguars to a 75-70 comeback victory over the Northern Kentucky Norse in a Horizon League women’s basketball contest Wednesday night at Fairgrounds Coliseum.
Smith, a sophomore guard from Fort Wayne, Indiana, scored a game-high 23 points, including seven crucial free throws in the final 33 seconds, to seal the win for the Jaguars before an announced crowd of 437. Her efforts helped IU Indy overcome a 10-point first-quarter deficit and a persistent Northern Kentucky offense that held the lead for over 35 minutes of game time.
The most critical sequence unfolded in the closing half-minute with the Jaguars clinging to a 71-70 lead. After Smith converted a driving layup and the ensuing free throw to establish that one-point margin, Northern Kentucky’s Maddie Moody was fouled on a 3-point attempt with 22 seconds remaining. Moody, who led the Norse with 19 points, made the first free throw but missed the second attempt that would have tied the game. A lane violation negated the third attempt, returning possession to IU Indy.
Smith was immediately fouled and sank both free throws with 17 seconds left to push the lead to 73-70. Following a Northern Kentucky timeout, the Norse turned the ball over on the ensuing inbounds pass when Kamora Morgan’s pass was intercepted by IU Indy’s Julia Hall. Smith was fouled again and made two more free throws with nine seconds remaining to provide the final five-point margin.
The game was a tale of contrasting halves and quarters. Northern Kentucky dominated the opening period, racing to a 20-10 lead behind the inside presence of Moody and Abby Wolterman, who finished with 17 points. The Norse extended their lead to as many as 12 in the second quarter before the Jaguars closed the half on a 17-10 run to trim the deficit to 30-27 at intermission.
IU Indy’s defensive pressure keyed the turnaround. The Jaguars forced 14 turnovers, converting them into 18 points, and recorded 10 steals and six blocks. Northern Kentucky, meanwhile, struggled mightily from beyond the arc, making just 2 of 20 3-point attempts. The Norse countered by dominating the glass with a 45-33 rebounding advantage, including 10 offensive boards that led to 15 second-chance points.
The third quarter saw the teams trade baskets, with Northern Kentucky maintaining a narrow lead and taking a 47-46 advantage into the final period. The fourth quarter erupted into an offensive showcase, with the teams combining for 52 points. IU Indy outscored Northern Kentucky 29-23 in the frame, finally taking its first lead since the game’s opening minute on a Nevaeh Foster 3-pointer that made it 54-52 with 7:46 remaining.
From there, the lead changed hands five times. Karina Bystry kept the Norse in contention, scoring 12 of her 18 points in the fourth quarter. Her layup with 1:29 left gave Northern Kentucky a 69-68 lead, setting the stage for the final minute drama headlined by Smith.
Beyond Smith’s heroics, IU Indy received balanced contributions. Destini Craig added 12 points, while Foster scored 11, including two key 3-pointers. Ariana Williams provided a significant spark off the bench with eight points, six rebounds and two blocks in just 15 minutes.
For Northern Kentucky, Moody’s 19 points and eight rebounds paced the effort. Bystry’s 18 points and Wolterman’s 17 points and nine rebounds were central to the Norse attack. Mya Meredith facilitated the offense with a game-high six assists to go with 10 points.
Statistically, the game was a study in efficiency. IU Indy shot 46.6% from the field on 27-of-58 shooting and posted an offensive rating of 96.8 points per 100 possessions. Northern Kentucky, despite more shot attempts, finished at 40% shooting from the floor and an offensive rating of 87.1, hampered by its 3-point shooting and 16-of-24 performance from the foul line.
The victory improved IU Indy’s season record to 8-11 overall. The Jaguars have now won two of their last three Horizon League games. Northern Kentucky, which had won five of its last six conference games entering the contest, fell to 10-12. The result avenged a 63-44 loss the Jaguars suffered at Northern Kentucky just three weeks prior on Jan. 2.
Both teams continue Horizon League play this weekend. IU Indy travels to face Oakland on Jan. 28, while Northern Kentucky returns home to host Fort Wayne on Jan. 24.
