Saint Bonaventure at Niagara
SANBORN, N.Y. (Interstat) — The Saint Bonaventure women’s basketball team used a dominant defensive performance across the middle quarters to secure a 74-56 road victory over Niagara on Friday night at the Gallagher Center.
The Bonnies improved to 2-0 on the young season, while the Purple Eagles fell to 0-1 in their opener.
Saint Bonaventure took control of the game with a stifling defensive effort, holding Niagara to just 20 points combined in the second and third quarters. After leading 33-23 at halftime, the Bonnies put the game out of reach by outscoring the Purple Eagles 19-6 in the third period, building an insurmountable 52-29 lead heading into the final quarter.
Laycee Drake led all scorers for Saint Bonaventure, finishing with 19 points and eight rebounds. Mallory Heise provided a significant offensive spark off the bench, contributing 14 points. Aaliyah Parker added 10 points and five rebounds in a balanced Bonnies attack.
Niagara’s Chasity Wilson led her team with 17 points in the losing effort.
The Bonnies set the tone early, opening the game on a 7-0 run and finishing the first quarter with an 18-9 lead. Their defense was the story, however, forcing 20 Niagara turnovers and converting them into 17 points. Saint Bonaventure also controlled the glass, out-rebounding the Purple Eagles and grabbing eight offensive rebounds to Niagara’s two.
Despite a late surge from Niagara, which outscored Saint Bonaventure 27-22 in the fourth quarter, the Bonnies’ lead was never in serious jeopardy.
Saint Bonaventure shot 42.3 percent from the floor and was efficient from the free-throw line, making 24 of 31 attempts. Niagara struggled offensively, shooting 36.8 percent from the field and just 58.8 percent from the charity stripe.
The game was played in front of an announced crowd of 1,347. Saint Bonaventure returns to action on Tuesday at Binghamton, while Niagara travels to face Stonehill the same day.
