Alabama State at Alabama A&M
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (Interstat) — A key Southwestern Athletic Conference women’s basketball matchup is set for Saturday as the Alabama A&M Bulldogs host the Alabama State Lady Hornets at T.M. Elmore Gymnasium.
The Bulldogs (17-9 overall) enter with the stronger record and have won seven consecutive games, last defeating Bethune-Cookman 55-43 on Feb. 21. Their defense has been stifling, holding opponents to 50 points or fewer in four of those seven wins. Forward Jaida Belton has been a consistent force, averaging 11.4 points and 7.6 rebounds per game during the win streak, including an 18-point, 9-rebound performance in the most recent victory.
The Lady Hornets (14-12) have won four of their last five, including a narrow 62-59 road win at Florida A&M on Feb. 21. Their success has been fueled by forward Charlese McClendon, who is coming off a dominant 21-rebound, 12-point double-double in that contest. Over the last five games, McClendon is averaging 10.2 points and 9.2 rebounds.
Alabama A&M won the first meeting this season, 63-50, on Jan. 10 in Montgomery. The Bulldogs’ defense limited Alabama State to 30.4% shooting from the field in that game.
Saturday’s contest features a contrast in momentum. Alabama A&M’s sustained defensive excellence will be tested by an Alabama State team that has found a rhythm in close games, with three of its last four wins decided by three points or fewer. Containing McClendon on the interior will be a primary focus for the Bulldogs’ frontcourt, while the Lady Hornets must solve a Bulldog defense that has been among the SWAC’s best during its current run.
Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. CST. Alabama State visits Southern on Tuesday, March 3, while Alabama A&M hosts Grambling on the same date.
