Alabama A&M Holds Off Alabama State in Defensive SWAC Showdown
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by missed opportunities and relentless pressure, the Alabama A&M Bulldogs grinded out a 51-43 victory over their in-state rival Alabama State Lady Hornets in a Southwestern Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Saturday at a packed T.M. Elmore Gymnasium.
A crowd of 6,175 witnessed a contest where offensive execution was at a premium, but the Bulldogs’ superior efficiency at the free-throw line and a commanding defensive presence in the paint proved decisive. Alabama A&M improved to 18-9 overall, while Alabama State fell to 14-13.
The game’s pivotal stretch arrived late in the fourth quarter, with Alabama A&M clinging to a narrow lead. Leading 46-43 with just over five minutes remaining, the Bulldogs’ defense forced a critical sequence. After Alabama State’s Ny’Keria Flowers missed two free throws, the Lady Hornets’ Clearia Peterson secured the offensive rebound and scored a putback to cut the deficit to one point. On the ensuing possession, however, Peterson stole the ball back for Alabama State, injecting sudden hope for the visitors.
That hope was swiftly extinguished by the Bulldogs’ interior defense. On the next Alabama State trip, Peterson was fouled but missed both free throws. Alabama A&M capitalized immediately, drawing a foul on the other end where Rakiyah Beal sank two clutch free throws to push the lead back to three points. The Bulldogs then forced a missed layup from Alabama State’s Alanah Pooler, and after a media timeout, extended their lead at the line again. With 3:46 left, Alabama A&M’s Jaida Belton was fouled and made both free throws, culminating a 6-0 run that stretched the lead to 50-44 and effectively sealed the game. Alabama State managed only one more field goal in the final four minutes.
The contest was characterized by frigid shooting. Alabama State finished 15 of 56 from the field, a dismal 26.8 percent, and compounded their woes by making only 8 of 20 free throws. Alabama A&M was not much better from the floor, shooting 17 of 46, but their decisive advantage came at the charity stripe, where they converted 16 of 23 attempts. The Bulldogs also dominated the paint defensively, blocking four shots, with Aniya Palmer recording three of them.
Alabama A&M established control early, leading 10-9 after a disjointed first quarter and extending the margin to 22-20 by halftime. The Lady Hornets stayed within striking distance through the third, trailing 35-28 entering the final period, but could never string together enough successful offensive possessions to overtake the Bulldogs.
Jaida Belton led Alabama A&M with 12 points and anchored the defense with a block. Kamiyha Griffin provided a crucial spark off the bench, adding 10 points on efficient shooting. For Alabama State, Alanah Pooler battled for a team-high 10 points and a game-high 15 rebounds, but the Lady Hornets’ offense never found a consistent rhythm, turning the ball over 21 times against the Bulldogs’ aggressive defense.
Alabama A&M’s victory reinforced their position in the SWAC standings, while Alabama State saw a three-game winning streak snapped in a game where offensive struggles ultimately proved too great to overcome.
Alabama State looks to rebound when they host Southern on Tuesday. Alabama A&M returns to action the same afternoon, hosting Grambling.
