Norfolk State at Coppin State
BALTIMORE (Interstat) — A surging Norfolk State looks to continue its climb in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference standings when it visits struggling Coppin State in a women’s basketball matchup Saturday.
The Spartans (15-12) enter the Physical Education Complex on a five-game winning streak, their latest a 69-60 road victory at Morgan State on Thursday. Guard Anjanae Richardson, the team’s catalyst, nearly posted a double-double in that win with 11 points and nine assists. Over her last seven games, Richardson is averaging 14.4 points and 4.7 assists, including a 19-point performance in a 57-51 win at Maryland-Eastern Shore.
Norfolk State’s defense has been stifling during its streak, holding opponents to an average of 50.6 points per game. The Spartans previously defeated Coppin State 69-58 in Norfolk on Jan. 24.
The host Eagles (9-20) have lost three of their last four, including a 75-67 defeat at Howard on Thursday. Guard Paris McBride has been a consistent bright spot, logging 40 minutes and contributing 13 points and six assists in that loss. She scored 17 points in a win over Morgan State on Jan. 31.
Coppin State’s offense has struggled for consistency, a concern against Norfolk State’s recent defensive form. The Eagles will need a strong performance from McBride and forward Khila Morris, who had 17 points against Howard, to challenge the Spartans.
Saturday’s contest is the regular-season finale for both teams before the MEAC tournament. Norfolk State seeks momentum heading into a home game against Howard next Thursday, while Coppin State aims to regroup before visiting Morgan State the same day.
Tip-off is set for Saturday afternoon in Baltimore.
