Norfolk State Dominates Coppin State in Women’s Basketball Rout

BALTIMORE (Interstat) — The Norfolk State Spartans delivered a defensive masterclass, holding the Coppin State Eagles to a historically low offensive output in a commanding 73-34 victory in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Saturday at the Coppin State Physical Education Complex.

From the opening tip, Norfolk State established a suffocating presence that never relented. The Spartans forced Coppin State into 23 turnovers, converting them into 27 points, while also holding the Eagles to an abysmal 13-of-53 shooting from the field, a rate of 24.5 percent. The most glaring statistic was Coppin State’s complete inability to connect from beyond the arc, missing all 18 of its three-point attempts.

The game’s decisive stretch came in the second quarter, where Norfolk State transformed a competitive contest into a lopsided affair. Leading 12-10 after a back-and-forth first period, the Spartans unleashed a 25-7 run in the second quarter. The Eagles went scoreless for over six minutes during the frame as Norfolk State’s pressure intensified. Coppin State managed just five field goals in the entire first half, heading into the break trailing 37-23.

The defensive stranglehold only tightened after halftime. Norfolk State limited Coppin State to five points in the third quarter and six in the fourth, allowing a mere 11 points in the entire second half. The Eagles’ 34 total points marked one of the lowest scoring outputs in the conference this season, a testament to the Spartans’ relentless effort on that end of the floor.

Da’Brya Clark, a Baltimore native, led all scorers with 15 points for Norfolk State in her return home. Cire Worley added 13 points, while Carmen Kweti provided a significant spark off the bench with 10 points and relentless work on the offensive glass. The Spartans dominated the rebounding battle 53-35, including 15 offensive boards that led to 19 second-chance points.

For Coppin State, Sydney Burris was the lone player to reach double figures, finishing with 14 points. The Eagles’ offensive rating of 44.7 points per 100 possessions underscored the profound struggles they faced against Norfolk State’s scheme.

The most important part of the game was unquestionably Norfolk State’s second-quarter surge, which was fueled entirely by its defense. The Spartans created a cascade of Coppin State turnovers and missed shots during that period, which then ignited their transition offense and allowed them to build an insurmountable lead. That quarter set the tone for the remainder of the game, demoralizing the Eagles and allowing Norfolk State to cruise to its most decisive conference win of the season.

With the victory, Norfolk State improved to 16-12 overall and strengthened its position in the MEAC standings. Coppin State fell to 9-21. An announced crowd of 268 witnessed the defensive clinic.

The Spartans will conclude their regular season at home against Howard on Thursday. Coppin State will finish its season on the road at Morgan State, also on Thursday.
