Nicholls State Edges Southeastern Louisiana in Tight Southland Conference Finale
THIBODAUX, La. (Interstat) — In a game defined by grit over grace, the Nicholls State Colonels edged the Southeastern Louisiana Lions 57-55 in a tense Southland Conference women’s basketball clash Saturday at Stopher Gym.
The contest, played before an intimate crowd of 514, was a defensive struggle marked by cold shooting and frequent turnovers. Neither team led by more than six points, and the outcome remained in doubt until the final possession.
Nicholls State improved to 13-15 overall, while Southeastern Louisiana fell to 5-23.
The most critical sequence unfolded in the game’s final 12 seconds. With the score knotted at 55, Nicholls State’s Sh’Diamond McKnight, who finished with a team-high 16 points, drove and dished to Jasmine Matthews in the lane. Matthews converted a contested layup with 11 seconds remaining to put the Colonels ahead for good.
Southeastern Louisiana had a chance to tie or win on its final trip. After a timeout, the Lions worked the ball to Fatime Seck, but her three-point attempt from the wing as time expired missed the mark, sealing the Colonels’ narrow victory.
The game was a stark contrast in offensive styles. Southeastern Louisiana relied heavily on the perimeter shooting of Aliyah Collins and Lihi Azouri. Collins, a 5-foot-5 guard from College Station, Texas, led all scorers with 17 points, including three three-pointers. Azouri, from Herzelia, Israel, added 13 points, also hitting three shots from beyond the arc. The Lions made seven three-pointers to Nicholls State’s two.
However, the Colonels countered with superior interior play and defensive pressure. They outscored Southeastern Louisiana 34-20 in the paint and forced 15 turnovers, converting them into 18 points. Nicholls State also dominated the offensive glass, grabbing 15 rebounds to the Lions’ 10, which led to 13 second-chance points.
Nicholls State built its largest lead at 28-22 late in the second quarter, but Southeastern Louisiana closed the half on a 6-0 run to tie the game. The Lions then carried that momentum into the third quarter, outscoring the Colonels 18-11 to take a 41-39 lead into the final period.
The fourth quarter featured five ties and three lead changes. Tanita Swift provided crucial production for Nicholls State off the bench, scoring all 10 of her points in the second half. Jesslynn Jalomo of Laredo, Texas, added 11 points, including a key floating jumper down the stretch, and recorded a block.
Southeastern Louisiana’s offense stagnated late, managing only two field goals in the final five minutes. Despite the loss, the Lions showed resilience, particularly from Collins, who played 33 minutes and added four assists.
Nicholls State’s defense was the ultimate difference. The Colonels held Southeastern Louisiana to 35.2% shooting from the field and an offensive rating of 83.8 points per 100 possessions. While Nicholls State shot only 39.6% itself, its ability to generate extra possessions through offensive rebounds and steals proved decisive.
The win gave Nicholls State a regular-season sweep of the Lions, having also won 69-66 in Hammond on Jan. 24.
Southeastern Louisiana travels to face Lamar on Monday. Nicholls State returns to action Tuesday at home against Texas A&M-Commerce.
