California Baptist at Tarleton State

STEPHENVILLE, Texas (Interstat) — A surging California Baptist women’s basketball team looks to complete a regular-season sweep of Tarleton State when the Lancers visit the Texans in a Western Athletic Conference matchup Saturday.

The Lancers (18-10, 11-6 WAC) enter Wisdom Gym having won three of their last four, including a 79-72 road victory at Texas-Arlington on Thursday. Guard Filipa Barros led the way with 23 points and seven assists, continuing a stellar stretch. Over her last eight games, the dynamic guard is averaging 16.1 points and 5.8 assists per contest.

California Baptist defeated Tarleton State 77-67 in Stephenville just over three weeks ago on Feb. 5. Barros scored 22 points in that win. The Lancers also won the season’s first meeting, 80-68, on Jan. 3 in Riverside.

Tarleton State (12-15, 6-11) seeks to halt a four-game skid and gain momentum before next week’s conference tournament. The Texans are coming off a 65-51 home loss to Utah Valley on Thursday. Despite the team’s struggles, guard Jakoriah Long has been a consistent bright spot, scoring 20 or more points in three of her last five outings. She had 16 points in the earlier loss to the Lancers this month.

The Texans will aim to leverage their home court, where they are 8-6 this season, to disrupt a Lancers squad fighting for seeding. California Baptist currently sits in third place in the WAC standings, while Tarleton State is tied for eighth.

Tipoff is set for Saturday afternoon at Wisdom Gym. The Lancers’ final regular-season road trip continues next week at Abilene Christian, while the Texans close their schedule at Texas-Arlington on Thursday.
