California Baptist Lancers Hold Off Tarleton State Texans in WAC Matchup

STEPHENVILLE, Texas (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive pressure and offensive struggles, California Baptist used a decisive third-quarter run to pull away from Tarleton State and secure a 76-67 victory in a Western Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Saturday at Wisdom Gym.

The Lancers, who swept the season series from the Texans, improved to 19-10 overall and in conference play. Tarleton State fell to 12-16.

The contest was a grind from the outset, with both teams committing more turnovers than they recorded assists. California Baptist finished with 17 turnovers against just three assists, while Tarleton State had 11 turnovers and six assists. The difference came in shooting efficiency. The Lancers converted 47.2% of their field goal attempts, making 25 of 53 shots. The Texans, meanwhile, were plagued by cold shooting, hitting only 24 of 68 attempts for a 35.3% clip. The disparity was stark from beyond the arc, where California Baptist made 6 of 14 three-pointers and Tarleton State managed just 3 of 20.

Shawnee Nordstrom led a balanced California Baptist attack with 16 points. She was joined in double figures by Grace Schmidt and Lauren Olsen, who also each scored 16 points, and Filipa Barros, who added 13. Schmidt, a 6-foot forward from Ixonia, Wisconsin, filled the stat sheet with two assists and a block.

Tarleton State was led by Jakoriah Long’s game-high 17 points. Caroline Lyles contributed 14 points and Elodie Lutbert, the 6-foot-6 center from Martinique, added 11 points, two assists and two blocks.

The first half was a low-scoring affair, with California Baptist taking a 30-25 lead into the break. The Lancers maintained a slim advantage through much of the third quarter before engineering the game’s pivotal stretch. Leading 38-35 with under seven minutes left in the period, California Baptist embarked on a 10-2 run. The surge was fueled by defense and free throws, as the Lancers forced multiple Texans turnovers and Schmidt converted four consecutive foul shots. A three-pointer by Nordstrom capped the run, pushing the lead to 48-37 with 4:56 remaining in the quarter.

Tarleton State could not recover from that deficit. The Texans cut the lead to seven points on several occasions in the fourth quarter but never got closer, as the Lancers consistently answered with baskets to stall any sustained momentum. California Baptist sealed the game at the free-throw line in the final minute, despite shooting 20 of 31 overall from the stripe.

A key factor was Tarleton State’s inability to capitalize on extra opportunities. The Texans grabbed 13 offensive rebounds to California Baptist’s eight but were outscored in second-chance points. The Lancers also protected the rim effectively, registering five blocks to Tarleton State’s four.

The game was played before an announced crowd of 533. California Baptist’s offensive rating was 99.1 points per 100 possessions, while Tarleton State’s was 85.0.

California Baptist will conclude its regular season on the road at Abilene Christian on Thursday before hosting Southern Utah on Saturday. Tarleton State finishes its season at Texas-Arlington on Thursday.
