Delaware State at Coppin State

Preview: Delaware State Hornets at Coppin State Eagles

BALTIMORE (Interstat) — Two Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference women’s basketball teams seeking momentum will meet Saturday when the Coppin State Eagles host the Delaware State Hornets.

The game at Coppin State’s Physical Education Complex tips off a critical February stretch for both squads. Coppin State (6-18) enters with a slight edge in the conference standings and is coming off an 81-49 non-conference victory over Washington Adventist on Tuesday. The Eagles have shown recent flashes, including a 69-45 league win over Morgan State on Jan. 31.

Delaware State (4-17) looks to snap a two-game skid after falling 58-47 to Maryland-Eastern Shore last Saturday. The Hornets’ last victory was a 67-47 road win at South Carolina State on Jan. 22.

This matchup is a quick rematch of a Jan. 3 meeting in Dover, Delaware, which Coppin State won 60-59. The Eagles have relied heavily on guard Khila Morris, who is coming off a 15-point, 7-assist performance against Washington Adventist. Over her last seven games, Morris has averaged 13.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 4.1 assists, providing crucial all-around production.

The Hornets will counter with guard Jermesha Frierson, their most consistent scoring threat. Frierson logged 38 minutes and led her team with 13 points and six rebounds in the loss to UMES. She had a season-high 19 points in a Jan. 10 game against Norfolk State.

Both teams have struggled with consistency this season, making this contest pivotal for building confidence ahead of the MEAC tournament. Coppin State will aim to protect its home court and sweep the season series, while Delaware State seeks revenge and a crucial conference road win to alter its trajectory.

Following this game, Delaware State travels to face North Carolina Central on Monday. Coppin State’s next contest is at South Carolina State on Thursday, Feb. 12.
