Coppin State Women Dominate Delaware State Behind Morris’ 24 Points
BALTIMORE (Interstat) — The Coppin State Eagles, led by a dominant 24-point performance from Khila Morris, overwhelmed the Delaware State Hornets with a relentless defensive effort to secure an 83-59 victory in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Saturday at the Coppin State Physical Education Complex.
The game was effectively decided in a blistering first quarter, which proved to be the most important stretch of the contest. Coppin State erupted for 27 points while forcing eight Delaware State turnovers, converting those miscues into easy transition opportunities. The Eagles set the tone immediately, as Paris McBride connected on two three-pointers in the opening 90 seconds, both assisted by Morris, to spark a 13-0 run before Delaware State registered its first field goal.
Delaware State never recovered from the early onslaught. The Hornets struggled to handle Coppin State’s defensive pressure all afternoon, committing 27 turnovers which the Eagles translated into 36 points. Coppin State also tallied 17 steals, with its backcourt of McBride and Morris consistently disrupting passing lanes and initiating the fast break.
Morris, a junior guard from the Bronx, New York, was the catalyst, filling the stat sheet with 24 points, six assists and four rebounds in 31 minutes. She orchestrated the offense efficiently and was a central figure in the game-breaking first-quarter run. Erin Henry provided a massive spark off the bench for the Eagles, scoring 18 of her points in the first half, including a pair of three-pointers in the final minute of the second quarter that extended Coppin State’s lead to 45-25 at intermission.
The Eagles’ offensive execution was sharp, shooting 54.4% from the field and assisting on 17 of their 31 made baskets. They also controlled the glass, out-rebounding Delaware State and securing 11 offensive rebounds.
For Delaware State, the offensive struggles were pronounced beyond the turnover issues. The Hornets shot just 2 for 10 from three-point range and managed only seven assists on 25 made field goals. Jermesha Frierson led the Hornets with 13 points, while Kaitlyn Adams added 15. The Hornets showed brief signs of life in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 16 points, but Coppin State responded with a 7-0 spurt to quell any notion of a comeback.
The victory improves Coppin State’s record to 7-18 overall. The Eagles have now won three of their last four games. Delaware State falls to 4-18 and has lost five consecutive contests. The Eagles also completed a regular-season sweep of the Hornets, having won a narrow 60-59 decision in Dover on Jan. 3.
Coppin State will look to continue its improved conference play when it travels to face South Carolina State on Thursday. Delaware State seeks to end its skid Monday at North Carolina Central.
