Barnes Leads Jacksonville State Past Delaware in Tight Conference USA Matchup

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a suffocating defensive stand and a dramatic final-minute swing, the Jacksonville State women’s basketball team edged Delaware 61-58 in a Conference USA matchup Saturday at Pete Mathews Coliseum.

The Gamecocks, who improved to 12-11 overall, survived a monumental individual performance from Delaware’s Lay Fantroy and a late rally by the Blue Hens by clamping down in the fourth quarter. After building a 52-40 lead late in the third period, Jacksonville State managed just nine points in the final frame but held Delaware to 4-of-16 shooting in the quarter to secure the victory.

The most critical sequence unfolded in the final 33 seconds with Jacksonville State clinging to a 60-58 lead. Delaware’s Ande’a Cherisier fouled Brooklyn McDaniel, sending the Gamecocks’ guard to the line for two shots with 12 seconds remaining. McDaniel made the first free throw to extend the lead to three but missed the second. Fantroy secured the defensive rebound for Delaware, giving the Blue Hens a final chance to force overtime.

Out of a timeout, Delaware designed a play for a game-tying three-pointer. The inbounds pass went to Safi Kolliegbo, whose contested three-point attempt from the wing missed with three seconds left. Jacksonville State’s Mya Barnes grabbed the decisive defensive rebound as time expired, sealing the win before an announced crowd of 1,084.

The game was a tale of contrasting halves for Delaware, which fell to 11-12. The Blue Hens exploded for 22 first-quarter points, spearheaded by Fantroy’s early activity, but were utterly stymied in the second quarter, scoring only four points on 2-of-13 shooting. That offensive drought allowed Jacksonville State to turn a 22-18 deficit after one period into a 36-26 halftime lead, a margin the Gamecocks would nurse for the remainder of the contest.

Fantroy, a 5-foot-10 guard from Palestine, Texas, was spectacular in defeat, recording a double-double with 20 points and 16 rebounds to go with three assists, a block and two steals in 35 minutes. She was the engine for Delaware, especially during their third-quarter push to close the gap. Ella Wanzer added 10 points and Cherisier finished with 13 for the Blue Hens.

Jacksonville State’s victory was a balanced effort, led by Barnes’s two-way excellence. The 6-foot forward from Montgomery, Alabama, matched Fantroy with 20 points, adding six rebounds, four blocks and three steals. Her defensive presence was pivotal, particularly in protecting the rim against Delaware’s 34 paint points. Adriana Jones contributed 12 points, while Kyera Thornsbury chipped in nine points, five rebounds and three assists. The Gamecocks’ perimeter shooting proved a key differentiator, connecting on 9 of 25 three-point attempts compared to Delaware’s 4-of-16 performance from beyond the arc.

Statistically, the game was a defensive grind. Both teams had 65 possessions, with Jacksonville State posting an offensive rating of 93.4 to Delaware’s 88.9. The Gamecocks committed only nine turnovers, converting Delaware’s 13 miscues into 14 points. Jacksonville State also dominated the shot-blocking category, swatting six attempts to Delaware’s two.

The win snapped a three-game losing skid for Jacksonville State, which had dropped contests to Liberty, Louisiana Tech and Sam Houston. Delaware saw its two-game winning streak, which included an overtime victory at Kennesaw State, come to an end.

Delaware will return home to host New Mexico State on Thursday. Jacksonville State hits the road for its next contest, traveling to face Middle Tennessee on Thursday.
