Austin Peay at North Alabama
FLORENCE, Ala. (Interstat) — The Austin Peay Governors look to halt a two-game skid when they visit the North Alabama Lions in a key ASUN Conference women’s basketball matchup Wednesday night at Flowers Hall.
Austin Peay (13-7) enters having dropped narrow decisions to North Florida (69-66) and Jacksonville (70-68) last week. The Governors are led by forward Lameria Thomas, who is coming off a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds in the loss to Jacksonville. Over her last five games, Thomas is averaging 9.8 points and 5.6 rebounds.
North Alabama (10-10) has found its rhythm, winning four of its last five contests. The Lions are powered by guard Alexsandra Alvarado, who is averaging 19.2 points over that same five-game stretch. She exploded for a career-high 37 points in a road win at Jacksonville on Jan. 17 and scored 19 in Saturday’s 60-55 victory over Florida Gulf Coast.
The Governors hold the overall series edge, but the Lions won the most recent meeting. Both teams feature balanced scoring attacks, with Austin Peay’s Jim’Miyah Branton (15 points, 6 assists vs. Jacksonville) and North Alabama’s Sofia Ceppellotti (13 points vs. FGCU) providing crucial secondary offense.
Austin Peay’s defense, which allows an average of 60.2 points per game, will be tested by Alvarado’s hot hand and a North Alabama offense averaging 66.5 points in conference play. The Governors will aim to control the interior, where they hold a +4.8 average rebounding margin.
Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. CST. The Governors continue their road trip at Eastern Kentucky on Saturday. North Alabama begins a three-game road swing at Queens University of Charlotte on Saturday.
