Alvarado Leads North Alabama to Narrow Win Over Austin Peay
FLORENCE, Ala. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by missed shots and crucial free throws, the North Alabama Lions edged the Austin Peay Governors 55-50 in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Wednesday night at Flowers Hall.
The contest, witnessed by 1,246 fans, saw both teams grind through offensive inefficiency, but the Lions made enough plays in the final minutes to secure the victory and even their season record at 11-10. Austin Peay fell to 13-8.
The decisive sequence unfolded in the game’s closing minute with North Alabama clinging to a 52-50 lead. Austin Peay’s Jim’Miyah Branton was fouled on a 3-point attempt with 27 seconds remaining but missed all three free throws. North Alabama’ Alexsandra Alvarado secured the defensive rebound and was immediately fouled.
Alvarado, who led all scorers with 18 points, sank the first free throw to extend the lead to three. After missing the second, a scramble for the rebound resulted in a held ball, with the possession arrow favoring North Alabama. Following a timeout, Alvarado was fouled again and hit both free throws with seven seconds left, sealing the five-point margin.
The game was characterized by frigid shooting. Austin Peay finished 16 of 57 from the field, a 28.1% clip, and just 4 of 21 from 3-point range. North Alabama was only marginally better, shooting 42.2% on 19 of 45, but also struggled from deep at 3 for 12. The Governors kept themselves in contention through sheer effort on the glass, outrebounding the Lions 45-31 and grabbing 12 offensive boards, but they could not overcome 14 turnovers and their poor shooting night.
North Alabama built its victory on interior scoring, outscoring Austin Peay 28-18 in the paint, and by capitalizing on Governors’ mistakes, scoring 16 points off turnovers.
The first half set the tone for a low-scoring affair. The Lions took a 12-11 lead after one quarter, with Sofia Ceppellotti’s tip-in and a Katie Criswell 3-pointer providing early momentum. Austin Peay found a rhythm in the second quarter, erupting for 20 points. A 9-0 run fueled by Jade Rucker, who scored 10 of her 12 points in the period, gave the Governors a 28-25 lead late in the half. However, Alvarado’s driving layup and subsequent free throw with one second left sent the teams to the locker room tied at 31.
The third quarter was an offensive nadir for both sides. The teams combined for just 22 points, with Austin Peay managing only nine. North Alabama’s 13-point frame, powered by six points from Alvarado, gave them a 44-40 edge heading to the fourth.
Austin Peay battled to stay close in the final period. Trailing 48-44, a driving layup by Lameria Thomas cut the deficit to two with just over a minute to play. After a North Alabama turnover, the Governors had a chance to tie or take the lead, setting up the fateful possession that ended with Branton’s missed free throws and Alvarado’s clinching shots at the line.
For North Alabama, Alvarado added six assists and two blocks to her 18 points in 33 minutes. Criswell contributed 10 points and played all 40 minutes, while Ceppellotti chipped in eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Beyond Rucker’s 12 points, Austin Peay was led by Branton’s 11 points and three assists. Anovia Sheals added eight points.
The game’s tempo was deliberate, with both teams using 68 possessions. North Alabama’s offensive rating of 80.4 narrowly bested Austin Peay’s 73.0, reflecting the slim margin dictated by the defensive effort on both ends.
Austin Peay looks to rebound on the road Saturday at Eastern Kentucky. North Alabama begins a three-game road trip Saturday at Queens (N.C.).
