Princeton Rallies Past Cornell in Ivy League Women’s Basketball

PRINCETON, N.J. (Interstat) — In a game defined by opportunistic defense and a decisive third-quarter surge, the Princeton Tigers overcame a sluggish first half to defeat the Cornell Big Red 72-61 in an Ivy League women’s basketball contest Saturday at Jadwin Gymnasium.

The Tigers, improving to 18-2 overall, leveraged a 19-2 advantage in points off turnovers and a dominant performance from Olivia Hutcherson to pull away from a Cornell team that led for much of the opening half. The Big Red fell to 8-12 with the loss.

Princeton’s victory was far from straightforward. Cornell, coming off a road win at Penn, controlled the early tempo. The Big Red shot efficiently in the first quarter, connecting on 7 of 12 field goal attempts, and led 16-18 after one period. The Tigers’ offense sputtered in the second quarter, managing only nine points, and Cornell took a 27-25 lead into halftime despite its own scoring drought over the final four minutes of the half.

The complexion of the game changed irrevocably in the third quarter. Princeton’s defensive pressure, which produced eight steals for the game, began to force Cornell into mistakes. The Tigers opened the second half on an 8-0 run, fueled by a Hutcherson-assisted three-pointer from Skye Belker and a Hutcherson layup off a Cornell turnover. That sequence gave Princeton a 33-27 lead it would not relinquish.

Hutcherson, a junior from Johns Creek, Georgia, was the catalyst. She finished with a game-high 20 points and seven rebounds, consistently attacking the basket and capitalizing on Princeton’s transition opportunities generated by its defense. Her back-to-back steals and layups midway through the third quarter stretched a narrow lead to seven points and stifled Cornell’s momentum.

While Hutcherson provided the interior scoring, backcourt mate Skye Belker offered a perimeter complement. The sophomore from Los Angeles also scored 20 points, including four three-pointers, and dished out five assists. Their combined 40 points offset strong individual efforts from Cornell’s Rachel Kaus and Clarke Jackson.

Kaus, a forward from Lake Bluff, Illinois, led Cornell with 20 points, while Jackson, a guard from Columbus, Ohio, posted a near triple-double with 12 points, eight rebounds and three assists in a full 40 minutes. Emily Pape added 14 points for the Big Red.

Princeton’s ability to value possession proved decisive. The Tigers committed only five turnovers, while Cornell was forced into 11. That disparity directly translated to the 19-4 Princeton edge in points off turnovers, a margin that ultimately decided the game. The Tigers also shared the ball effectively, recording eight assists to Cornell’s two, and shot 43.9% from the floor compared to Cornell’s 52.1%, but attempted nine more shots due to their advantage in turnovers and offensive rebounds.

After Princeton’s third-quarter run established a 48-43 lead, the Tigers sealed the victory at the free-throw line in the fourth quarter. Cornell closed to within four points at 58-54 on a Clarke Jackson layup with just over seven minutes to play, but Princeton responded with a 7-0 run, capped by an Ashley Chea three-pointer, to push the lead back to double digits. Chea finished with 11 points and five assists for the Tigers.

Cornell’s offense, which had been efficient early, was held to 15 points in the final quarter on 6-of-15 shooting as Princeton continued to apply defensive pressure. The Big Red’s final attempt to rally was thwarted when Belker hit a pull-up jumper and converted a free throw to extend the lead to 72-61 with under a minute to play.

The announced attendance was 1,734. Princeton next hosts Penn on Friday, Feb. 6. Cornell returns home to face Columbia on Saturday, Feb. 7.
