Coppin State Women Dominate Morgan State in MEAC Matchup

BALTIMORE (Interstat) — In a matchup of teams seeking momentum in a difficult season, the Coppin State Eagles used a dominant rebounding performance and a decisive second-quarter surge to pull away from the Morgan State Bears for a 69-45 victory in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Saturday at the Coppin State Physical Education Complex.

The Eagles, who entered the game with a 4-18 record, improved to 5-18 overall. The Bears, who have now lost three straight, fell to 3-20.

The most important stretch of the game arrived in the second quarter, transforming a competitive contest into a comfortable Coppin State lead. After Morgan State’s Sierra Headquist made a layup to cut the Eagles’ lead to 21-20 with 6:42 remaining in the first half, Coppin State seized control with a 15-2 run to close the quarter. The Eagles’ defense stifled the Bears, forcing poor shots and turnovers, while their offense found a rhythm from beyond the arc. Skylar Barnes hit two three-pointers during the run, and Paris McBride added another, sending Coppin State into halftime with a 36-22 advantage.

Morgan State never recovered from that pivotal stretch. The Bears struggled offensively all afternoon, shooting a frigid 30.6 percent from the floor and making only one of their 12 attempts from three-point range. Their offensive rating of 66.6 points per 100 possessions underscored the difficulty of generating consistent scoring against Coppin State’s defense.

Coppin State, while not shooting much better at 35.4 percent overall, capitalized on second-chance opportunities and perimeter shooting. The Eagles outrebounded Morgan State 55-38, but the most telling statistic was a 20-7 advantage in offensive rebounds, leading to numerous extra possessions. Coppin State also connected on nine three-pointers compared to Morgan State’s one, a 24-point disparity from long distance.

Guard Paris McBride led all scorers for Coppin State, finishing with 17 points, four rebounds and four assists in 29 minutes. Her backcourt mate, Skylar Barnes, added 15 points and five rebounds, while forward Khila Morris contributed 14 points, five rebounds and three assists. The Eagles’ interior presence was anchored by Sydney Burris, who grabbed 10 rebounds to go with eight points, and Patricia Sosa Lora, who also pulled down 10 rebounds and blocked two shots.

For Morgan State, Sierra Headquist was the lone player to reach double figures, scoring 10 points. Forward Kailyn Nash nearly posted a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds. The Bears’ guards found little room to operate, with starting guards Tiyanna James and Michaela Bogans combining for just five points on 1-for-9 shooting.

The game began slowly for both sides, with Coppin State holding a narrow 18-15 lead after a first quarter defined more by missed shots and turnovers than fluid offense. The Eagles’ game-changing run in the second quarter established a double-digit lead they would not relinquish. Morgan State made a brief push early in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 12 points, but Coppin State responded promptly to quell any notion of a comeback, maintaining at least a 14-point lead throughout the entire fourth quarter.

The victory gives Coppin State a positive start to the second half of the MEAC schedule, while Morgan State continues to search for answers during a season with only three wins. According to the Interstat ELO system, Coppin State was projected with an 83.4 percent probability to win the contest, a forecast borne out by their superior execution, particularly during the critical second-quarter sequence.

Coppin State will next host non-conference opponent Washington Adventist on Tuesday. Morgan State returns home to face Maryland-Eastern Shore on Feb. 7. The two Baltimore rivals are scheduled to meet again in the regular-season finale at Morgan State on March 5.
