Louisiana-Lafayette at Marshall
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (Interstat) — A stark contrast in fortunes will be on display Saturday when the surging Marshall women host struggling Louisiana-Lafayette in a Sun Belt Conference basketball matchup at the Cam Henderson Center.
The Thundering Herd (17-6) enter the contest looking to rebound from a narrow 85-82 home loss to Troy on Wednesday. That defeat snapped a three-game winning streak for Marshall, which remains among the conference’s top teams. The Ragin’ Cajuns (2-19) aim to halt a prolonged slump, having lost 10 of their last 11 games. They are coming off a 96-45 road loss at James Madison on Thursday.
The matchup features two of the league’s most dynamic scorers. Marshall is led by guard Timaya Lewis-Eutsey, who is coming off a spectacular 33-point, 10-assist performance against Troy. Over her last five games, she has averaged 26.2 points and 6.2 assists, establishing herself as a primary offensive engine for the Herd.
For Louisiana-Lafayette, the focus will be on guard Mikaylah Manley. She scored 21 points in the loss to James Madison and has been a bright spot during a difficult season, including a 25-point outing in the Cajuns’ last victory, a 69-66 win over Coastal Carolina on Jan. 21. Her scoring output will be critical for a team averaging just 54.6 points per game.
Marshall’s offense, averaging 73.3 points, will test a Louisiana-Lafayette defense that has allowed 80 or more points in six games this season. The Herd have been strong at home with a 9-2 record in Huntington.
The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. tipoff on Jan. 31. Following this contest, Marshall will travel to face South Alabama on Feb. 4, while Louisiana-Lafayette will host Old Dominion on the same date.
