Lewis-Eutsey Leads Marshall to Dominant Win Over Louisiana-Lafayette
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (Interstat) — Timaya Lewis-Eutsey scored 24 points and Marshall’s defense delivered a historic second-half performance, holding Louisiana-Lafayette to just two points in the third quarter en route to a 95-54 victory in a women’s basketball game Saturday at Cam Henderson Center.
The Thundering Herd, improving to 18-6 overall, turned a competitive first half into a rout by outscoring the visiting Ragin’ Cajuns 48-21 after halftime. The defensive showcase in the third quarter, where Louisiana-Lafayette managed only a single field goal, was the pivotal stretch of the game. Marshall converted 15 Louisiana-Lafayette turnovers into 29 points, relentlessly capitalizing on mistakes to fuel its transition attack.
Lewis-Eutsey, a 5-foot-8 guard from Trenton, New Jersey, filled the stat sheet, adding five rebounds, five assists and a block to her game-high point total in 30 minutes of action. She spearheaded an efficient Marshall offense that saw four other players reach double figures.
Kassie Ingram, a sophomore from Cincinnati, provided a major spark off the bench with 15 points and seven rebounds. Meredith Maier of Fairmont, West Virginia, scored 17 points, including three 3-pointers, while Peyton Ilderton of Logan, West Virginia, contributed 12 points and five assists. Ni’Kiah Chesterfield added seven points and four rebounds.
Louisiana-Lafayette, which fell to 2-20, was led by Mikaylah Manley’s double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Amijah Price added 10 points and four rebounds off the bench. The Ragin’ Cajuns stayed within striking distance early, trailing just 47-33 at halftime after scoring 18 points in the first quarter and 15 in the second.
The game disintegrated for the visitors after the break. Marshall opened the third quarter on a 22-2 run, holding Louisiana-Lafayette without a field goal for nearly nine minutes. The Ragin’ Cajuns’ only points of the period came on two Amijah Price free throws at the 7:12 mark. During the onslaught, Lewis-Eutsey scored six points, Ingram added five, and the Herd forced eight turnovers.
Marshall’s lead ballooned to as many as 43 points in the fourth quarter as the Herd continued to pour in points, finishing with 26 in the final period to match their first-quarter output.
A crowd of 1,538 at the Cam Henderson Center watched Marshall dominate nearly every facet. Both teams finished with 32 points in the paint, but the Herd’s overwhelming advantage in points off turnovers told the story of their defensive pressure. The victory keeps Marshall in strong contention near the top of the Sun Belt Conference standings.
Louisiana-Lafayette continues to search for answers during a difficult season, having now lost five consecutive games. The Ragin’ Cajuns will look to regroup before hosting Old Dominion on Wednesday.
Marshall, which entered the game with a 97.6 percent probability to win according to Interstat’s ELO system, will hit the road for its next contest at South Alabama on Wednesday.
