Idaho at Northern Colorado

GREELEY, Colo. (Interstat) — A critical Big Sky Conference women’s basketball showdown is set for Thursday when the Idaho Vandals visit the Northern Colorado Bears at Butler-Hancock Athletic Center.

Both teams enter with nearly identical records and championship aspirations. Idaho is 15-5 overall and riding a four-game winning streak. Northern Colorado stands at 15-6 and has won five of its last six contests. The matchup features two of the league’s top facilitators in a battle for conference positioning.

The Vandals are powered by guard Hope Hassmann, who is coming off a spectacular 20-point, 12-assist performance in an 84-66 road win at Portland State on Saturday. Over her last eight games, Hassmann has averaged 11.8 points and 5.0 assists, serving as the engine for Idaho’s offense. Kyra Gardner, who scored 19 points against Portland State, provides additional backcourt firepower.

Northern Colorado counters with its own standout guard in Gabi Fields. She posted 10 points, three rebounds and three assists in the Bears’ 72-59 victory over Northern Arizona this past Saturday. Fields has been a model of consistency, dishing four or more assists in six of her last eight games, including an 11-point, nine-assist effort in a win over Montana on Jan. 3.

Idaho’s recent surge has been marked by high-scoring outputs, averaging 80.5 points during its current win streak. Northern Colorado has relied on a stout defense, holding opponents to 59.3 points per game over its last three victories.

The Vandals’ only conference loss came in a 99-66 rout at Montana State on Jan. 10, a game in which Hassmann was limited to eight points. Northern Colorado’s conference setbacks were a narrow 86-79 loss to Montana State and a 71-57 defeat in the rematch in Bozeman.

Thursday’s contest is the first of a regular-season series between the teams, with the rematch scheduled for Feb. 28 in Moscow, Idaho. The outcome will provide early clarity in a tightly contested Big Sky race.
