Idaho Holds Off Northern Colorado in Defensive Big Sky Battle

GARDEN CITY, Colo. (Interstat) — The Idaho Vandals, leaning on a dominant defensive performance in the second half and a decisive late surge, outlasted the Northern Colorado Bears 62-55 in a pivotal Big Sky Conference women’s basketball clash on Thursday afternoon at Butler-Hancock Athletic Center.

In a game that saw 10 lead changes and was tied on eight occasions, Idaho improved to 16-5 overall and strengthened its position in the conference race. Northern Colorado fell to 15-7.

The contest was a tale of two halves, defined by a critical third-quarter defensive stand. After a first half that ended with Idaho holding a narrow 35-31 lead, the Vandals’ offense stalled completely in the third period, managing only seven points. However, their defense was equally stifling, limiting the Bears to 11 points in the quarter. This defensive grit prevented Northern Colorado from capitalizing on Idaho’s scoring drought and allowed the Vandals to enter the final frame trailing by just a single point, 42-41.

The fourth quarter belonged to Idaho. Trailing 45-42 with under eight minutes to play, the Vandals unleashed a game-changing 13-0 run over the next four and a half minutes. The surge was fueled by defense and key contributions from across the lineup. Kyra Gardner hit a crucial 3-pointer, Lorena Barbosa powered inside for a layup, and Hope Hassmann converted free throws. Ana Beatriz Passos Alves da Silva capped the run with another 3-pointer, giving Idaho a 55-45 lead with 3:30 remaining, its largest of the night.

Northern Colorado, which had led for over 23 minutes of game time, could not recover. The Bears clawed back to within five points in the final minute but could get no closer as Idaho sealed the game at the free-throw line.

Idaho’s victory was a product of balanced scoring and interior presence. Hope Hassmann and Lorena Barbosa each scored 15 points to lead the Vandals. Barbosa, the 6-foot-5 freshman from Itatiba, Brazil, added four rebounds and two blocks in just 16 minutes of action, providing a critical spark off the bench. Ana Pinheiro added nine points, four rebounds and four assists, while Debora Dos Santos contributed seven points and seven rebounds.

The Vandals controlled the paint, outscoring Northern Colorado 30-24 inside, and converted Bears’ turnovers into 12 points.

Northern Colorado was led by Tatum West, who posted 12 points and eight rebounds. Erin Powell added eight points and four rebounds. The Bears struggled to find consistent offense outside of West, particularly during Idaho’s pivotal second-half defensive stretches.

A crowd of 2,810 watched the tightly contested conference matchup, which saw Idaho snap a two-game road winning streak for Northern Colorado in the series. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Northern Colorado had entered the game with a 54.9 percent probability to win.

Idaho, which has now won four of its last five games, will look to continue its momentum when it hosts Northern Arizona on Saturday. Northern Colorado aims to rebound on the road at Eastern Washington, also on Saturday.
