Jacksonville State at Sam Houston

Preview: Jacksonville State Gamecocks at Sam Houston Bearkats

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (Interstat) — A pivotal Conference USA women’s basketball matchup featuring two teams with identical aspirations but contrasting momentum will tip off Thursday night when the Jacksonville State Gamecocks visit the Sam Houston Bearkats at Johnson Coliseum.

Both teams enter Jan. 29 with 11-win records, but the Gamecocks (11-8, 4-2 CUSA) ride a three-game winning streak, while the Bearkats (11-6, 3-2) look to rebound from two consecutive narrow conference losses.

Jacksonville State has found its rhythm in January, powered by a defense that has held opponents to an average of 51 points during its current streak. A 73-60 win over UTEP on Saturday showcased a balanced attack. While standout forward Mya Barnes contributed 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists, backcourt support from Makala Hobdy (13 points, six assists) and Mina Djurdjevic (12 points, seven rebounds) proved crucial. Barnes, a key player to watch, has been consistently productive, averaging 12.1 points over her last seven games, including an 18-point performance in a rout of Kennesaw State.

Sam Houston, however, has stumbled after a strong start to league play, falling 66-60 at Florida International and 68-67 at home to Middle Tennessee. The Bearkats will lean on guard Fanta Kone, who orchestrates the offense. Kone is averaging 8.7 assists over her last three contests, including a 10-assist, 14-point double-double in an overtime win at Delaware. Her backcourt mate, Deborah Ogayemi, leads the team in scoring during conference play.

The Gamecocks’ recent surge has been built on the road, with four of their last five wins coming away from home. Sam Houston aims to protect its home court, where it is 7-3 this season.

This contest is the first of a regular-season series, with a rematch scheduled in Jacksonville, Alabama, on Feb. 21. The outcome will position the winner favorably in the crowded CUSA standings as the season’s second half begins.

Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST Thursday at Johnson Coliseum.
