Sam Houston Rallies Past Jacksonville State in Conference USA Women’s Basketball
HUNTSVILLE, Texas (Interstat) — The Sam Houston Bearkats used a dominant second-quarter surge to seize control and never looked back, defeating the Jacksonville State Gamecocks 70-51 in a Conference USA women’s basketball game Thursday night at Johnson Coliseum.
The Bearkats, improving to 12-6 overall, overcame a slow start by clamping down defensively after the first quarter. The Gamecocks, who fell to 11-9, opened the game with efficient offense, shooting over 50% from the field in the first period to hold a 23-20 lead. That early advantage quickly evaporated as Sam Houston’s pressure defense took over.
The turning point came in the second quarter. Sam Houston outscored Jacksonville State 23-11, fueled by a relentless defensive effort that generated eight steals in the period alone. The Bearkats converted Jacksonville State’s 10 first-half turnovers into 15 points, establishing a 43-34 halftime lead they would not relinquish. The Gamecocks’ offensive rhythm completely disintegrated after the first quarter, managing just 28 points over the final three periods on 7-of-32 shooting from the field.
Sam Houston’s Fanta Kone, a guard from Bamako, Mali, led all scorers with 16 points, providing a critical offensive spark. The Bearkats’ balance was on full display as four players scored in double figures. Forward Nyla Inmon of Tyler, Texas, recorded 14 points, four assists and was a force on the glass, while guard Aysia Ward-Strong of Dallas also added 14 points. Esther Rodellar of Barcelona, Spain, contributed eight points off the bench, including two timely three-pointers.
Jacksonville State was led by 13-point efforts from both forward Mya Barnes of Montgomery, Alabama, and guard Eden Sample of Suwanee, Georgia. Mina Djurdjevic, a forward from Belgrade, Serbia, added 10 points but was hampered by foul trouble. The Gamecocks’ offense struggled mightily against Sam Houston’s active defense, finishing the game with 22 turnovers and an offensive rating of just 70.9 points per 100 possessions. They shot 35.6% from the field and were outrebounded 45-31, with Sam Houston grabbing 15 offensive boards.
The Bearkats extended their lead in the third quarter, holding Jacksonville State to a single field goal for nearly seven minutes. A 10-2 run to close the period, capped by a transition layup from Ward-Strong, pushed the advantage to 57-41 entering the fourth. Sam Houston’s lead ballooned to as many as 21 points in the final frame before settling on the 19-point margin of victory.
Sam Houston’s defensive intensity was the story, as they tallied 15 steals and 15 assists, consistently turning defense into offense. They scored 21 points off turnovers compared to just six for Jacksonville State and outscored the Gamecocks 34-26 in the paint.
The announced attendance was 555.
Jacksonville State looks to rebound on the road Saturday at Louisiana Tech. Sam Houston remains at home to host Kennesaw State on Saturday.
