Stetson Holds Off North Alabama for ASUN Road Win

FLORENCE, Ala. (Interstat) — In a tense ASUN Conference clash defined by defense and a decisive final minute, the Stetson Hatters edged the North Alabama Lions 66-62 in women’s basketball on Thursday night at Flowers Hall.

The game, witnessed by 1,158 fans, was a defensive struggle throughout, with neither team able to establish a commanding lead. Stetson improved to 12-8 overall, while North Alabama fell to 9-10.

The contest turned dramatically in the final 30 seconds. With Stetson clinging to a 62-60 lead, North Alabama’s Alexsandra Alvarado drove for a potential tying layup, but her attempt was off the mark. Stetson’s Rose Caso secured the critical defensive rebound and was immediately fouled.

On the ensuing inbounds play, North Alabama’s defense forced a held ball, but the possession arrow favored Stetson. The Lions were then forced to foul again, sending Stetson’s Jorah Eppley to the free-throw line with six seconds remaining. Eppley, a guard from Virginia Beach, Virginia, calmly sank both shots to extend the Hatters’ lead to 64-60.

North Alabama’s last gasp came from Alvarado, but her three-point attempt to cut the deficit to one missed everything. Eppley was fouled on the rebound and iced the game with two more free throws, providing the final margin.

The fourth quarter was a microcosm of the tight battle, featuring five lead changes. Stetson’s offense found a rhythm late, scoring 21 points in the final period after being held to 45 through three quarters. The Hatters were propelled by the interior dominance of Aleah Sorrentino and the timely scoring of Rose Caso and Mary McMillan.

Sorrentino, a 6-foot-3 junior from Palm Bay, Florida, was a force for Stetson, scoring a game-high 19 points in just 25 minutes, including several key baskets in the paint during the fourth-quarter rally. She also added a block and a steal. Caso, a 5-10 guard from Ellington, Connecticut, contributed 14 points and several crucial defensive stops, while McMillan, a 5-6 guard from Apopka, Florida, orchestrated the offense with 14 points and five assists.

North Alabama was led by the dynamic guard play of Alexsandra Alvarado, who logged 37 minutes and finished with 21 points and six assists. Sofia Ceppellotti, a 6-1 forward from Udine, Italy, added 13 points and a game-high 38 minutes of action. India Howard provided a solid inside presence for the Lions with 10 points, two assists, and a block.

The first half set the tone for a defensive battle. North Alabama led 18-13 after one quarter and maintained a narrow 34-29 advantage at halftime. The Lions extended their lead to as many as seven points in the third quarter, but Stetson chipped away, entering the final period down 49-45.

Stetson’s victory completed a regular-season sweep of the Lions, having also won 76-59 in DeLand on Jan. 3. The game lived up to its pregame projection as a toss-up, with statistical models giving Stetson only a slight edge.

The Hatters’ ability to execute in the final minute, particularly at the free-throw line and on the defensive glass, proved to be the difference in a game where every possession carried significant weight. The win keeps Stetson in the upper tier of the ASUN standings as the conference schedule reaches its midpoint.

Stetson next travels to face Central Arkansas on Saturday. North Alabama remains at home to host Florida Gulf Coast, also on Saturday.
