Alabama Rallies on Road to Defeat Georgia in SEC Women’s Basketball
ATHENS, Ga. (Interstat) — In a pivotal Southeastern Conference clash between two teams jockeying for position in the upper tier of the standings, the Alabama women’s basketball team used a dominant defensive second quarter to seize control and never relinquish it, defeating Georgia 68-53 on Thursday night at Stegeman Coliseum.
The game’s defining stretch came in the second period, where the Crimson Tide transformed an early eight-point deficit into a commanding halftime lead. After trailing 20-12 following the first quarter, Alabama’s defense locked down, holding the Bulldogs to a mere eight points in the second quarter. The Tide offense, meanwhile, found its rhythm, erupting for 19 points. The 19-8 frame flipped the script entirely, sending Alabama into the locker room with a 31-28 advantage.
The defensive intensity set the tone for the remainder of the contest. Georgia, which shot just 33.3% from the field for the game and a frigid 20% from three-point range, could not mount a sustained challenge after intermission. Alabama methodically extended its lead throughout the second half, winning the third quarter 22-19 and closing out the victory by holding the Bulldogs to just six points in the final period.
Alabama’s efficiency proved decisive. The Tide shot 54.5% from the floor and a sharp 47.1% from beyond the arc. They scored 68 points on just 63 possessions, translating to an offensive rating of 108.7. Georgia, by contrast, managed only 53 points on 67 possessions, an offensive rating of 79.0, hampered by 17 missed three-pointers and 12 turnovers.
Essence Cody, a 6-foot-4 forward from Valdosta, Georgia, led the Crimson Tide with a team-high 16 points in just 25 minutes of action, showcasing efficient interior scoring. Karly Weathers provided a crucial all-around performance, logging 38 minutes and contributing 11 points, five assists and two blocks. Jessica Timmons added 10 points and four assists, while Ta’Mia Scott chipped in 13 points.
For Georgia, Mia Woolfolk and Rylie Theuerkauf each scored 13 points, but the Bulldogs’ offense struggled to find consistency outside of brief flashes. They were out-rebounded defensively and failed to capitalize on forcing 17 Alabama turnovers, scoring only 10 points off those miscues.
The victory improved Alabama’s season record to 19-3 overall and marked a significant rebound after a loss to Tennessee in their previous SEC outing. Georgia, which had won three of its last four conference games, fell to 18-4. A crowd of 2,281 watched as the Crimson Tide executed their game plan with precision after the initial quarter, neutralizing Georgia’s home-court advantage.
Alabama, which entered the game as a slight 1.5-point favorite according to pregame betting lines, covered the spread with the 15-point victory. The combined score of 121 points fell well under the pregame over/under line of 129.5. The win probability models, which gave Alabama a 58.1% chance to win, proved accurate as the Tide’s second-quarter surge established a margin Georgia could not overcome.
The Crimson Tide will look to carry this momentum into a tough road test at LSU on Sunday. Georgia, meanwhile, will aim to regroup before hosting Tennessee next Thursday.
