Princeton Defeats Brown in Defensive Ivy League Showdown
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Interstat) — The Princeton Tigers used a dominant second-quarter defensive performance to seize control and then held off a series of Brown rallies to secure a 58-49 victory in an Ivy League women’s basketball game Saturday at Pizzitola Sports Center.
The game’s pivotal stretch came in the second period, where Princeton’s defense completely stifled the Bears. After trailing 15-9 through one quarter, the Tigers outscored Brown 15-5 in the second, turning a six-point deficit into a 24-20 halftime lead. Brown managed just two field goals in the quarter, a layup by Alyssa Moreland and a 3-pointer by Isabella Wesley, while committing six turnovers against a swarming Princeton defense.
Princeton carried that momentum into the third quarter, opening with a 7-2 run to extend its lead to nine points. Brown, led by Moreland’s activity inside, would answer with runs of its own, cutting the deficit to four points on three separate occasions in the second half, but each time the Tigers had a response.
The most critical response came early in the fourth quarter. After Brown’s Grace Arnolie hit two free throws to pull the Bears within 38-37, Princeton’s Toby Nweke connected on a 3-pointer off an Olivia Hutcherson assist. Following another Arnolie free throw, Nweke struck again from beyond the arc, pushing the lead back to six points. Brown never got closer than five points the rest of the way, as Princeton closed the game by making 6 of 8 free throws in the final minute.
Fadima Tall led a balanced Princeton attack with 12 points and eight rebounds. Skye Belker added 11 points and five rebounds, while Hutcherson contributed nine points, four rebounds and four assists. Ashley Chea directed the offense with seven assists. The Tigers, who entered the game with a national ELO projection of a 93.10 percent chance to win, improved to 17-1 overall.
Brown was paced by a double-double from Alyssa Moreland, who finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Grace Arnolie led all scorers with 14 points. The Bears, who outscored Princeton 30-24 in the paint, fell to 11-6.
The game was characterized by Princeton’s ability to generate offense from its defense, scoring 11 points off 15 Brown turnovers, and by timely shooting. While both teams struggled from the floor, the Tigers’ 15-5 second-quarter edge proved insurmountable. Brown’s offense, which started efficiently with 15 first-quarter points, went cold for long stretches, shooting just 5-of-27 from the field across the second and third quarters combined.
Princeton’s victory extends its winning streak and solidifies its position atop the Ivy League. The Tigers will look to continue their momentum next weekend with home games against Columbia and Cornell. Brown, seeking to rebound, heads on the road to face Dartmouth and Harvard. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Princeton on Feb. 21.
