Lady Griz Edge Wildcats in Defensive Big Sky Struggle

OGDEN, Utah (Interstat) — In a game defined more by grit than grace, the Montana Lady Griz escaped the Dee Events Center with a 51-50 victory over the Weber State Wildcats in a Big Sky Conference women’s basketball clash on Thursday night.

The contest, witnessed by 373 fans, was a defensive struggle from the opening tip. Both teams combined to shoot under 34 percent from the field and committed 33 turnovers. Montana’s offensive rating of 74.6 points per 100 possessions barely edged out Weber State’s 71.7, underscoring the night’s offensive frustrations.

Montana built its lead through the first three quarters, entering the final period ahead 41-33. The Lady Griz relied on a methodical, if inefficient, attack led by sophomore forward Avery Waddington. The 6-foot-3 Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, native dominated inside, scoring a game-high 20 points on 9-of-17 shooting, adding three assists and a block in 35 minutes. Her early work in the paint helped Montana establish a 12-10 lead after the first quarter and a 29-22 advantage at halftime.

Weber State, however, refused to capitulate. The Wildcats, sparked by the defensive intensity of Antoniette Emma-Nnopu and a late offensive surge, mounted a fierce fourth-quarter comeback. The 5-11 junior from Geelong, Australia, was pivotal on both ends, finishing with 12 points, two blocks and two steals, consistently disrupting Montana’s offensive flow.

The Wildcats outscored Montana 17-10 in the final frame. With just over 13 seconds remaining, Emma-Nnopu converted a driving layup off an assist from Lanae Billy, cutting Montana’s lead to a single point. Billy, who logged a team-high 38 minutes, orchestrated the late rally, finishing with 11 points and five assists.

The most critical sequence of the game unfolded in the final four seconds. After Emma-Nnopu’s basket made it 51-50, Montana called a timeout to advance the ball. On the ensuing inbounds play, Weber State’s pressure forced a foul, sending Montana’s Draya Wacker to the free-throw line with a chance to extend the lead. Wacker missed the front end of a one-and-one opportunity, giving Weber State a final chance with 2.2 seconds left.

Weber State inbounded from its own end, but Montana’s defense smothered the Wildcats’ attempt to get a clean look. A desperation heave fell short as time expired, sealing the narrow victory for the visiting Lady Griz.

Beyond Waddington’s scoring, Montana received a significant boost from guard Rae Ehrman. The Eden Prairie, Minnesota, native came off the bench to score 12 points, all from beyond the arc, hitting 4-of-8 three-point attempts. Her shooting provided crucial spacing in an otherwise cramped offensive game.

Weber State’s defense kept them in contention, recording eight blocks and five steals. Nicole Willardson, a 6-4 freshman from Richfield, Utah, contributed six points and two blocks in just 16 minutes, while Japrix Stubbs added four points and two blocks.

Turnovers proved to be Weber State’s undoing. The Wildcats committed 20 giveaways, leading to 12 Montana points. Montana, while not pristine with 13 turnovers, capitalized better on the extra opportunities. The Wildcats also struggled from deep, making only 4 of 19 three-point attempts, while Montana connected on 7 of 30.

The win improved Montana’s season record to 5-13 overall and 2-3 in Big Sky play. Weber State fell to 6-12 and 1-4 in the conference. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Montana entered the game with a 55.4 percent probability to win.

Montana continues its road trip at Idaho State on Saturday. Weber State will look to rebound at home against Montana State, also on Saturday.
