Alabama A&M Routs Prairie View in SWAC Women’s Basketball

HEMPSTEAD, Texas (Interstat) — The Alabama A&M women’s basketball team used a dominant defensive performance and a decisive early run to secure a 68-41 victory over Prairie View A&M in a Southwestern Athletic Conference game Thursday night at the William Nicks Building.

The Bulldogs (9-9, 4-1 SWAC) held the Lady Panthers (2-16, 0-5) to a season-low in points and a frigid 25.5% shooting from the field to win their third consecutive conference game. The most important stretch of the contest came in the first half, where Alabama A&M’s defense completely stifled the Prairie View offense, setting the tone for a lopsided affair.

After a slow start for both teams, Alabama A&M broke open a tight game with a 15-0 run spanning the end of the first quarter and the beginning of the second. Leading just 9-7 with under three minutes to play in the opening period, the Bulldogs clamped down. They forced four Prairie View turnovers in the final 2:40 of the quarter, converting them into easy baskets. Kaila Walker, who finished with a game-high 17 points, capped the first-quarter scoring with a layup off a Vanessa Wimberly assist to make it 15-7.

The defensive onslaught continued into the second quarter. The Bulldogs held Prairie View scoreless for the first 5:47 of the period, extending their run. Rakiyah Beal, who added 10 points, scored on a transition layup, and Coriah Beck, who finished with 15 points and two blocks, converted a three-point play during the surge. By the time Prairie View’s Crystal Schultz hit a free throw at the 4:13 mark of the second quarter, Alabama A&M had built a 24-8 lead. The Lady Panthers managed just six points in the entire second quarter, shooting 2-of-14 from the field, and entered halftime trailing 34-17.

The game was effectively decided by that defensive stand. Prairie View never cut the deficit below 15 points in the second half. The Lady Panthers finished with an offensive rating of 57.4, scoring just 41 points on 71 possessions. They were outrebounded 57-36 overall, and the Bulldogs’ 28 offensive rebounds led to a 40-12 advantage in points in the paint.

Alabama A&M’s defense was multifaceted, generating 12 steals and blocking four shots while consistently disrupting Prairie View’s offensive sets. The Lady Panthers’ primary scorers were consistently harassed; Alana Shields led the team with 11 points but committed six turnovers against the Bulldogs’ pressure. Ja’Nya Polk provided a defensive bright spot for Prairie View with six blocks but was limited to five points.

While not efficient from the field themselves, shooting 36.1%, the Bulldogs’ sheer volume of opportunities, fueled by their rebounding and forced turnovers, proved insurmountable. They scored 23 points off 17 Prairie View turnovers. Maori Davenport contributed eight points and nine rebounds for Alabama A&M, and Wimberly directed the offense with six assists.

The victory moves Alabama A&M above .500 overall and keeps them near the top of the SWAC standings. The Bulldogs will look to continue their momentum when they travel to face Texas Southern on Saturday. Prairie View, mired in a six-game losing streak, will try to find its first conference win at home against Alabama State on Saturday.
