Cal Poly at UC Davis
DAVIS, Calif. (Interstat) — A surging UC Davis women’s basketball team will look to rebound from a rare conference setback when it hosts struggling Cal Poly in a Big West matchup Saturday at The Pavilion at ARC.
The Aggies (10-5) saw a three-game winning streak snapped in a 55-47 home loss to UC Santa Barbara on Thursday. Prior to that, UC Davis had opened conference play with decisive road wins at Cal State Northridge (85-66) and Cal State Bakersfield (69-59). Guard Ryann Bennett has been a consistent catalyst, averaging 14 points over her last five games, including a 26-point outburst against CSUN.
They will face a Cal Poly team seeking its first road win of the season. The Mustangs (3-12) are coming off a 77-68 home loss to Cal State Northridge on Thursday, despite a career-high 31 points from junior guard Vanessa McManus. McManus has shouldered the offensive load, averaging 18.4 points over her last five contests. Cal Poly’s only win since late November was a 63-49 victory over Long Beach State on Jan. 3.
The matchup pits one of the conference’s top defenses against its most porous. UC Davis has held opponents to an average of 59.1 points per game this season. Cal Poly, conversely, allows a conference-worst 78.7 points per game and has surrendered 90 or more points three times in nonconference play.
UC Davis will aim to control the paint behind center Megan Norris, who had 12 points and two blocks in the loss to UCSB. Cal Poly will rely heavily on McManus and forward Charish Thompson, who added 15 points against CSUN.
This is the first of two regular-season meetings between the rivals. They will meet again in San Luis Obispo on Feb. 7.
Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. PST.
