Troy Routs Texas State in Sun Belt Women’s Basketball

TROY, Ala. (Interstat) — The Troy women’s basketball team delivered a dominant Sun Belt Conference performance Wednesday night, overwhelming Texas State from the opening tip and cruising to an 84-49 victory at Trojan Arena.

A decisive 30-point third quarter explosion by the Trojans turned a competitive first half into a runaway, showcasing the depth and defensive intensity that has propelled them to a 12-3 overall record. Texas State fell to 6-8.

The game’s pivotal stretch began immediately after halftime. Leading 38-25, Troy unleashed a 22-4 run over the first six minutes of the third quarter, effectively putting the contest out of reach. The Trojans’ defense was the catalyst, forcing a series of Texas State turnovers and converting them into easy transition baskets. Fortuna Ngnawo was instrumental during this surge, contributing steals, rebounds, and key buckets, while Zay Dyer provided rim protection and scoring punch.

Dyer, a 6-foot-2 sophomore from Atlanta, led all scorers with 19 points in just 25 minutes, adding five blocked shots to anchor the Troy defense. Her presence inside altered countless Texas State attempts and fueled the Trojans’ fast break.

Texas State, which entered the game having won three of its last four, struggled to find any consistent offensive rhythm against Troy’s pressure. The Bobcats were held to single-digit scoring in the second quarter and managed only 10 points in the decisive third period. Kyla McBride of Magnolia, Arkansas, led the Bobcats with 13 points and matched Dyer with five blocks, but her efforts were not enough to stem the Trojan tide.

Troy’s balance was on full display. Ngnawo, from Bafoussam, Cameroon, finished with 11 points and was a constant disruptive force defensively. Rachel Leggett added 11 points, and Detavia Salter provided efficient scoring off the bench with eight points in 12 minutes. Guards Ashley Baez of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and Saniya Jackson of Montgomery, Alabama, combined for 14 points and eight assists, directing an offense that consistently found high-percentage shots.

The Trojans set the tone early, opening the game on a 10-2 run. Texas State briefly found its footing behind McBride, who hit a three-pointer to pull the Bobcats within 16-15 late in the first quarter. However, Troy answered with five straight points to end the quarter and maintained a double-digit lead for nearly the entire second half.

The announced attendance of 1,250 saw Troy improve to 12-3 overall and 2-1 in Sun Belt play, while Texas State dropped to 6-8 and 1-2. The game was never in doubt according to pregame analytics, which gave Troy a 97 percent probability of victory, a forecast the Trojans fulfilled with authority.

Texas State will look to regroup on the road Saturday at Louisiana-Lafayette. Troy continues its homestand Saturday against Arkansas State. The two teams are scheduled for a rematch in San Marcos, Texas, on Jan. 17.
