Skyhawks Hold Off Panthers’ Rally for Ohio Valley Conference Win

MARTIN, Tenn. (Interstat) — In a game defined more by defensive grit than offensive artistry, the Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks grinded out a 58-51 victory over the Eastern Illinois Panthers in an Ohio Valley Conference women’s basketball matchup Saturday at Skyhawk Arena.

The contest, played before an announced crowd of 1,014, saw both teams struggle mightily from the field. The Skyhawks improved to 6-6 overall, while the Panthers’ difficult season continued, falling to 1-14.

The most important part of the game unfolded in the second quarter, where Tennessee-Martin established a cushion that Eastern Illinois spent the remainder of the afternoon trying to erase. After a low-scoring first quarter that ended with the Skyhawks ahead 11-9, the home team erupted for a 21-point second period. This surge was fueled by a combination of forced turnovers and aggressive drives to the basket, resulting in frequent trips to the free-throw line. Tennessee-Martin attempted 14 free throws in the quarter alone, making nine, as they built a 32-18 halftime lead.

Eastern Illinois, which shot a frigid 18 for 59 from the field and 4 for 29 from three-point range for the game, found itself in a deep hole largely due to its first-half offensive woes. The Panthers managed only 18 points through the first two quarters.

The Panthers displayed persistent fight, however, particularly in the final period. They outscored Tennessee-Martin 21-18 in the fourth quarter, mounting a sustained rally that repeatedly cut the deficit to single digits. A driving layup by Ella Lune of Brimfield, Illinois, brought Eastern Illinois within 53-49 with just over a minute remaining, capping a 9-2 run.

But the Skyhawks, led by the clutch play of Zakheria Thompson, held firm at the foul line down the stretch. Thompson, a 5-foot-10 guard from Zebulon, Georgia, sealed the game by making four critical free throws in the final 30 seconds, finishing with 14 points, eight rebounds and four blocks. Her defensive presence was pivotal throughout.

Kenley McCarn of Melbourne, Arkansas, led all scorers with 21 points for Tennessee-Martin, while Brittani Wells of Lakeland, Tennessee, added 10 points, six rebounds and five assists. The Skyhawks, despite shooting only 16 for 55 from the field, leveraged a 23-for-31 performance at the charity stripe and committed just eight turnovers to secure the win.

For Eastern Illinois, the offensive burden fell heavily on Ava Stoller of St. Petersburg, Florida, who scored 16 points. Meioshe Mason, a 6-foot-4 forward from Lebanon, Tennessee, posted a strong all-around line with nine points, 13 rebounds and four assists, anchoring the Panthers’ interior defense with a block and several altered shots.

Sydney-James Desroches of Miami, Florida, grabbed 10 rebounds for Eastern Illinois, which won the battle on the glass 45-41 and scored 24 points in the paint. Yet, the Panthers’ season-long offensive struggles persisted, as evidenced by an offensive rating of 74.9 points per 100 possessions.

The Skyhawks’ second-quarter explosion proved insurmountable, as Eastern Illinois could never fully recover from that decisive stretch, despite a valiant late push. The victory gave Tennessee-Martin a season sweep of the early conference home-and-home preparations, with the teams scheduled to meet again in Charleston, Illinois, on Jan. 29.

Eastern Illinois next hosts Tennessee Tech on Thursday. Tennessee-Martin travels to face Morehead State, also on Thursday.
